  • Rivals more expensive brand
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 46lb Thrust
The unit seems to be solidly constructed using quality materials. The clamping features are solid and work well. It also has a metal propeller that's easy to remove in case of weed clog. The unit operates quietly and shifts thru the speeds reassuringly. Led lights show usage level accurately and the telescoping throttle is convenient. Would definitely purchase again, just make sure of your usage parameters. ... show more

  • Powerful during wind storm
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 46lb Thrust
Used as trolling motor when wind came up. I had to put on full power to keep the waves from going into rock dam. It did the job and got me to the lee side of the lake.

  • Extremely Low Quality and Workmanship
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 46lb Thrust
This is the first time I have ever written a review and I don't usually complain even when I get bad service at a restaurant! However, there really should be a "buyer beware" on this product. I purchased this unit in order to use it on the bow of a fishing canoe. Prior to purchasing, I made sure that the unit was able to be converted to a bow mount use rather than the transom mount the way it comes from the seller. As I CAREFULLY followed every bit of the instructions on the Newport Vessels website, I quickly ran into an EXTREMELY frustrating problem once I took the cover off the unit to complete the simple process. In order to make the modification, one must remove a bolt that passes through upper house and through guide pole in order to allow the unit to spun around for the bow mount position. That head of that bolt is recessed into a hex-shape hole that is supposed to keep it from spinning when you loosen the nut on the other end. Well, that plastic hex hole was poorly crafted and there was no way it would have ever held the bolt! The bolt just spun around. Because it was recessed so far in, and after a couple of hours of trying to figure it out, I had no choice than to use my dremel and carefully grind the plastic housing away so that I could squeeze a needle nose plier or something to hold the bolt head. I realized this would not be the best-looking thing in the end, but I figured "no big deal". However, the bolt and nut didn't seem to go with one another as it was IMPOSSIBLE to simply unscrew the nut with a simple ratchet wrench. It is almost as if one was regular and the other was metric size. I mean, this thing was solid stuck on there! I ended up cutting the entire bolt off at the end replacing it with a similar size stainless steel and nut. At this point I was still fine with simply getting the darn thing working so I could get on the water with it. As I carefully followed the instructions in converting the unit as described, I couldn't help but to notice how cheap everything looks under the cover. The electrical wires look identical to those that one would find in their child's electric play toys or something. Not at all anything you would ever expect on something for any type of sporting or marine use! Also, this thing doesn't seem to be very tightly designed or engineered. Everything inside is very "loose". It is made with what seems to be the cheapest materials they could find. Nevertheless, I gave it a shot and tried it on my canoe. It lasted no more than 20 minutes on the first use! I've considered that maybe I did something wrong putting it back together. However, there isn't all that much that you can do wrong and I doubt it. The unit failed to move forward during the first use. Only the reverse still works. Also during the first use, after adjusting the height position a couple of times (as it is intended to do by loosening the adjustment screw on the tension ring around pole) the inner plastic ring that acts as a washer/spacer around the post came off completely. This ring is held in place by a raised edge that is supposed to keep it from slipping of the ring that goes around the tube. After only a couple of times of adjusting it, the edge basically wore out to nothing and there was no way to hold the piece in place. So I ended up having to constantly push it back in with my hand every time I tried to adjust it. Also, that piece is also not even solid all the way around. It has a "cut" in it which is to allow you to slip on by going around the tube. But this also makes it very unstable and unreliable. I had my doubts about buying this thing as it was only about $100.00. I thought maybe there's a game changer out there and there is no need to spend bigger bucks on a Minn Kota or something. Forget it! Big mistake. You get what you pay for. It's not really the $100+ all that much. After all, that's not a lot of money. It is the waste of time and aggravation of waiting for this to arrive (which took over a week) and then having it not work at all, really. Total waste of time. I didn't keep the box and I got tied up at work for a few days before I had time to deal with it again. At this point, it is more grief to return this thing than simply throwing it out. I fish in the Everglades and I wouldn't trust this thing at this point no matter who repaired it. I'm just gonna spend the money and get a Minn Kota. Nothing personal against Newport Vessels. But this thing should be taken off the market. I would say it isn't even adequate for hobby use of any type on anything. ... show more

  • Great Motor For the Price But Best For Small Water and Fair Weather
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 46lb Thrust
My 46lb NV with 30" shaft is a great match for my 13' Esquif Mallard ultralight square stern canoe. It is all the power I need and will get me back to the landing even against a stiff headwind. However, I wouldn't depend on it on open water or in remote wilderness. See major concern below. Minor issue: the battery cable is too short. In a small boat. a heavy battery probably needs to be pretty far forward in order to balance the weight of the operator and motor. With the Newport that requires extension cables. You can easily buy or make some, but why didn't they make the factory cables 2 feet longer? Major issue: Newport states that the head unit, where the electronics are, is not waterproof. They say it will be OK in light rain, but not heavy rain. Crazy! If you get caught in a thunderstorm you may be battling big swells, current or wake from bigger boats, trying to get back to safety. Your life and that of any passengers may depend on that motor continuing to run so you can keep the bow pointed into the waves. They don't promise that it will. And heaven forbid you should capsize miles from anywhere and dunk the head. Perhaps other motors are equally vulnerable. This is my first electric motor. But if I were a Newport engineer I would insist on waterproofing that head unit. ... show more

  • GREAT bang for the buck
Pattern Name: Motor Style: 46lb Thrust
5 Stars for the first run. I'll adjust if necessary, but so far, here's the review: GREAT bang for the buck. I've owned & been very satisfied with my Minn Kota's (30 & 35lb), but decided to try the NV 46lb for LESS money than a new 40lb MK. I'm pushing a 15.6' Coleman Journey canoe with myself, my son & all our fishing gear, so I figure over 500lbs total. 5 forward speeds ~ 1 is perfect for positioning, 2-3 is great for trolling, 4 moves you right along & 5.....when you hit 5, the canoe SURGES. It really gets you to when you're going. I forgot to turn on my GeoTracker so I could see an actual speed, but I was definitely impressed. Reverse speeds: Unlikely you'll ever need for than #1, but #3 backs you out in a hurry! Battery consumption: We were on the water for 2.5hrs & were moving up & down the shoreline. Light wind, gusty at times, so a lot of positioning. 2 good long runs at full speed, estimate total distance of about 2 miles. Size 29DC EverStart battery was still at 75% when we finished up. The mount itself is nylon & has a composite shaft. Seems to be of good quality. The 3 blade prop really digs in well. This model was a 30" shaft & I almost wish I'd gotten a 36" shaft model. When mounted on the canoe, dropped (almost) all the way down, it seems that it's just barely down far enough. It's clearly well below the bottom of the boat, but it felt as if it would bite more if it were down another few inches. Certainly not a complaint, just an observation. The motor itself is HEAVY, but I suppose that's normal for a larger saltwater motor. I'll only be using it in freshwater, so I suspect it'll last quite a while. The only gripe I have is that the cables are short - less than 4'. In order to place the battery where I want it, I'll have to splice another several feet of cable. Again, not a complaint, but I was expecting the cables to be about 6'. Liked the telescoping handle, though I may rig some sort of aftermarket handle to extend it even further. ... show more
