I don't understand all the negative reviews. This product is exactly as advertised. First of all, I received a box of, what look like (I didn't count them), about 160 little rectangular bricks, and I didn't need to break anything. They're, if it were candy, bite-sized. One--let me repeat that--one (!) is enough to light a fire with one--let me repeat that--one (!) match. If you need more bricks or more matches, I suggest you work on your fire-making skills and stop blaming this product. I've always been able to light a fire with one match and some paper and kindling. The only reason I got these is because I recently got a fireplace insert with a catlytic combuster, and, apparently, it is better not to use any paper with ink on it or treated paper with those. It lights immediately, it holds a flame a few minutes (I didn't time it) and long enough to light kindling, and thereby get the fire going. A possible (likely?) explanation for the negative reviews is that, and I see this with my neighbors, people continue to believe you do not need to season firewood or think it's a good idea to use colored newspaper or cardboard as kindling. It does its job. If it doesn't for you, look up some youtube videos on how to light a fire. ... show more

I am now on my 6th box of them (I think there about 80 in each box) and have been nothing short of amazed by them. We use them for everything, such as on our two Kamado Joe grills, our Weber Kettle grill, either of the two wood burning fireplaces, motorhome camping trips for firepits and portable grills, or our firepit outside. These little gems can be lit in pretty much any weather and will stay lit. On top of that, they do not burn up quickly, which gives them time to actually ignite their surrounding materials properly (charcoal or wood). I have used many other brands and types and they seem to have any one of a multitude of issues (too many chemicals, burns too quickly, won’t stay lit, takes too long to ignite, or too little given for the price being asked), but since switching to GreenSpark I have pretty much come to the conclusion that I can stop looking for a better starter. We keep ordering them off of Amazon. My brother-in-law now uses them at his home and keeps them in his motorhome too. Thanks for such an easy and clean solution. ... show more

    • Big squares, last long, but you have to separate each square, don't start as easy as last year's

These start my wood stove with easy long lasting squares. On my second box. I start fires often and these are better than newspaper or small branches, make little to no ash (Like newspaper ). I used these last year and they were different than the ones I received this winter. This year's squares did not start as easy as the box I bought last season. These blocks are bigger but some blocks take a while to catch with a fire lighter. Last year they started very fast, not requiring much lighter fluid. Still a good starter. ... show more

I hesitated to buy these until I tried to light the wood pellets for our new pizza oven. After looking at these starters, we began with a handful of pine shavings (their "wood wool" is an interesting term), but that experiment just went nowhere. The key ingredient to these, almost unlisted, is palm wax. These starters are almost odorless and when you touch a match to them they catch immediately and burn steadily and really do get the pellets going nicely. They come packed in a good cardboard box. I decided to repack them into a spare clear plastic (ca. 2-quart jar) for long term storage and used that opportunity to actually count them - why not? Surprisingly, we received 52 1/2 of them (one is very short), that calculates to 75% of their estimated 70 starters. Pretty far off the mark. That is my only disappointment. ... show more

My husband loves these for starting his charcoal grill and doesn't like others. You don't have to use lighter fluid, so they light very easliy, he sometimes has to use 2-3 at a time, but the price is not too bad. Very easy to use.

While a bit expensive, just a couple of these will rapidly start the kindling in my wood stove, on a cold winter morning. Touch a match to one of these, and your properly setup campfire is started. Just a few of these in a zip lock bag, with your matches, could be a life saver in the field. I have even started a fire with these, just using a flint and steel.
