    • Setup is an issue
I love art projects and this was definitely a fun one to do... after everything was ready 6+ hours later. Actually, I waited longer than they recommended because once it was ready I was no longer able to do it. Here's the issue: you need to mix the included powder with hot water then wait 6 hours for it to gel. This is something I wish I knew before I ordered. Long set up times are not something I do well with. I had planned to do this with my children (8 and 4 years old), but wound up trying it by myself when I had an extra few minutes. The gel was definitely too thick by the time I got to it, but it did work well. It was so thick that a layer stuck to the prints when I picked them up and I had to squeegee it off. This didn't seem to affect the prints at all and they came out bright and beautiful. The other issue I have is that it only comes with two packets of the powder mixture and no instructions how to order more or make your own. There is also no information about the science behind it, how it works, or the history behind the art of paper marbling. That seems like an easy thing to include (esp. for National Geographic) and I probably wouldn't mind as much about the powder mixture if there was more information included in the kit. The materials are all decent quality, nothing flimsy or cheap. The paper is thick and worked really well. The ink/paint is vibrant, worked well and there is more than enough for the number of prints this kit makes. The instructions are quite good. They take you through step by step with color pictures. So first off this is a really cool and simple marbling paint kit. Easy to use and lots of fun but you have to do some prep work before you can start and it takes 6 hrs to prep the liquid so you can add paint and start your inner artist exposition!! For any kids that wants to jump in and just start painting this is not the right kit/gift. Once you dissolve the packet with the water in the tray you leave covered for 6 hours and then you can start adding paint and swirling around. It was fun to use and everyone gets a chance (it comes with 12 thick absorbent pages). After you make your design you have to let it dry for a few hours so it sets and you can display it proudly.     • Plan ahead!
In order to do this craft, you would have to plan ahead, which is a problem for me because I’m very impatient but if you are not impatient, I think you would have a lot of fun with this craft. It comes with everything you need.

    • Long set up time
I got this kit as I like to make handmade books and would love to make marbled end papers for them. National Geographic is great for making kits for kids. The documents included are very informative and better yet educational. This is a good kit but I haven't had time to make any yet. The reason being is that you have to add thickener to your tray of water and then wait 6 hours! What kid is going to wait 6 hours before they can get into playing with paint and creating? I even can't find the time to set it up and come back in 6 hours. For this reason alone I dropped one star and had I known about this I probably wouldn't have ordered it. ... show more

As with any NatGeo kit, it's well thought out and has everything you need to do the activity. This Paint Marbling Arts & Crafts Kit requires planning though. The water thickener needs to be mixed and then it has to sit for 6 hours. Mix the thickener up in the tray, wait, then get started by adding some paint. You also need to have paper towels or something nearby to put the pictures on afterwards to dry. It was fun to do this craft. We haven't been disappointed yet with any of the NatGeo kits. ... show more

This is a great craft set. These types of marbleized paintings are really big right now and I'm glad to have an easy way to introduce my children to this art form. The set comes with everything you need to get started including a paint tray and nice, thick paper. The paper is really good quality, almost fabric-like, and stands up well to the large amounts of paint they will take on. My only complaint is the wait time. I didn't realize right away that you have to wait SIX hours after pouring the paint before you can apply it to the paper. Please make sure you are aware of that or you will have a very disappointed little artist on your hands if working with a child.     • Fun for a weekend project
If you have your own canvasses this would be much more fun since they would be a lot more durable than the paper they include in this, but for the price I didn’t expect super thick paper or anything close to a canvas. It does take a long time to dry so patience is a must for this!

I expected better from a Brand like National Geographic. I have similar sets that came with actual canvasses so I was a little disappointed. The tray is nice and thick but the paper canvases are disappointing. I suppose for children this is fine. It comes with a little thickening powder but it doesn't come with a lot of paint. And I'm disappointed that the colors are so basic. Over all it's a decent set for kids but not the best one out there for the price. ... show more
