Perfect for our grandson with an adult helper., aside from needing a NOT INCLUDED rock hammer and chisel. Smashing with a regular hammer may be fun and satisfying, but it is not educational. Splitting the geode is educational The instructions and 10 geodes were wonderful. We've opened two so far, one a regular geode, and one basically a rock. Our six year old grandson helped us score the outside, when he got bored and left, I could carefully split both: the geode basically down the middle with a displayable piece and lots of fragments; the rock, I split off a hunk that showed the crystals that were the rock Be sure to also order rock hammer and chisel, which increased educational possibilities. The media could not be loaded. We recently purchased this geode kit to do with the family as a Christmas gift! and it exceeded all our expectations! The kit included everything needed for a fantastic rock-breaking adventure: 4 rocks to smash and/or chisel, clear instructions, protective glasses, and a magnifying glass to examine the treasures within. We were thrilled to discover 3 amazing geodes, each with beautiful, sparkling crystals inside. One of the 4 rocks turned out to be a solid piece of crystal, which, while smaller than the rest, was still a delightful surprise and not at all a deal breaker. We used the chisel method for two of them and had to use the towel and smash method for the hard to open ones. Our 8 y/o kid absolutely loved the experience! This kit provides an excellent hands-on learning opportunity, perfect for children and adults alike. Overall, a wonderful purchase that brought joy and excitement for family fun. The media could not be loaded. We got this for our 5 year old son who loves rocks and crystals. This came with 4 closed rocks. The first one we tried we could not get open, tried a hammer with screwdriver and still couldn’t. I was hitting very hard and wouldn’t open. Two of them broke open very easily and looked so cool inside. Very shiny and tons of small crystals. The last one we were able to get open with a hammer but didn’t really look like much more than a rock. Overall I was impressed with the two geodes with tons of crystals and my son loved it! The last one we will have to order a chisel or something. Also, these are very messy, they leave dust and dirt everywhere so be aware of that! ... show more

I bought this box to teach kids about how beauty comes from within. They had a blast wearing the safety goggles that it came with and then after looking at the crystals through the magnifying glass that it also came with. We had geodes of all different colors. A couple were on the smaller size, like a golf ball, but most of them were the size of a cutie orange or an avocado. The value was also amazing, I was at a store the next day and 1 geode was selling for over $9, so this box was well worth the value and it included the safety glasses, a learning pamphlet and the magnifying glass. I highly recommend this product! I will say we hit the geodes several times and very hard before they cracked open so another time I would try scoring the geode that is suggested. ... show more

The lighter ones are the easiest to break. I was prepared to find that the description of the kit was a bit of hype. I was NOT. Prepared for how beautiful and instantly engaging these stones are. Purchased as a family activity- this kit exceeded my expectations. Getting the whole family to instantly fall in love with a branch of science is no small task and remarkable to find unfolding right before you as the kids with bored faces suddenly get round, astonished eyes as the first stone opens and all the glittering Chrystal s come to light for the first time since the world was created. The National Geographic Break Open 5 Jumbo Geodes was a fun and exciting activity, especially for kids who love science and exploration. Breaking them open was a blast, and the geodes that turned out well were really beautiful with fascinating crystal formations inside. However, not all of the geodes were impressive. A couple were mostly solid crystal structure with little to no inner cavity, which was disappointing considering the price and made all but one of them useless as display pieces. Despite that the images for this item displayed multiple colors of geode we received only plain white ones, I have no way of knowing if that is simply luck or what you should expect. Also, some were harder to break open than expected, the solid ones in particular gave our 10 year old extended periods of smacking them with a hammer to open. Overall, it's a fun, educational activity, but the results can be hit or miss. Great for curious kids, but don't expect all five geodes to be showstoppers.
