  • Very Good Chisels
Very nice chisels for the price. A little touch up (including removing lacquer and adding a secondary bevel) and flattening on some diamond stones and they were ready to chop. I only had to resharpen twice in 24 mortises in mahogany. Very tough blades and handles. I have some much more expensive bench chisels, but for beating with a mallet, I can’t see getting much better than these at any price. Not my first Narex chisels and likely not my last. Good value! ... show more

  • Very well made, solid, sharp.
Haven't actually used them yet, but they feel really solid and well put together, they are sharp, and feel like they will do a really good job.

  • Fantastic Mortise Chisels!
These are fantastic mortise chisels! Heck they are fantastic chisels! The build quality is superb with a really thick blades that are firmly attached to a very solid handle. The handles themselves are substantial and have a heft to them too. I have an 1/8" Narex bench chisel with the same style handle, but in blonde beech; ordered at the same time. The beech handle feels flimsy compared to these. I'm not sure what the difference is, but the mortise handles feel better in the hand too. It could be that the blonde bench handle has a slick finish on it, whereas these are more natural. I knew that mortise chisels would be hefty and longer, but I was surprised at how much longer and how much heftier they are. I've included pics of the chisels compared to box store Stanley bench chisels for a size comparison; the one on the left is a 1/2" and the one on the right is 1". Also, one reviewer commented on the packaging. Mine came in the proper Narex box. The interior of the box was a little beat up due to the chisels moving around during shipping. They weren't damaged, but had shredded quite a bit of the box. These are the best mortise chisels you can buy without paying tons of money, yet they are not cheap or flimsy. ... show more

  • Manufacturing quality makes them difficult to sharpen. Nice once they're sharp.
These chisels cut very well and hold an edge nicely. They were horrible to get into cutting shape, though. I use a WorkSharp 3000 which generally makes prepping new chisels a snap. They were too large to use with the built in guide, but that was fine, as I need mortise chisels to be large and sturdy. Getting them into the guide I use for large blades, though, was extremely difficult. The sides of these chisels are not square with the top or the back, and they're not quite parallel. This made holding them in the guide tenuous at best. Each of the three popped out of the angle jig at least once during sharpening. In order to hold them with any reliability, I had to crank down on the jig hard enough to tear my thumb against the tightening knob. When the did pop loose, they wouldn't re-register into quite the same position so that I could finish up the bevel I'd already started. It was really hard to tell about the quality of the grind in the factory bevel, since there wasn't a clear relationship between it and any of the chisel's other faces. They looked to be a nice 25 degrees, but compared to any surface I could use to hold them, the bevel didn't line up. I had to regrind the entire bevel. I ended up sharpening them to just-over 25 degrees so that I wouldn't have to take off the whole face of the bevel -- I couldn't keep them in the angle jig for long enough to do that. I'm not looking forward to sharpening them again. I may just take my chances at working them free-hand and hope for the best. ... show more

  • Good value, sort of?
Like some other reviews, these arrive pretty rough, the steel is very hard, almost brittle more than i'm used to. The backs are in no way "flat" and if you need them that way be prepared to spend some time, I've spent 45 min on the 10mm and haven't even polished it yet, they seem like a decent value for the $, it is for mortising so the don't need to be fancy.... ... show more

  • Happy
I am happy with this price point and the item recieved compared to a couple hundo for LV or LN chisels. They take a long time to flatten the back even with a trend diamond but once you do they work good. Not happy with the primary bevel being at 25, was hoping for 30 but I guess that is was the secondary bevel is for :) Steel holds up well enough for the price again compared to LN or LV. I also have the bench chisels and my review is the same for those! ... show more

  • Very Pleased
I have a number of chisels and needed a 3/8th (6mm) mortise. The price was low enough so I bought the set of three. So far I am very happy. Chisels were sharp out of the box and look to be pretty high quality all around. Like some others, I have my good chisels and "bang-around" chisels. So far, these look like they will be in the first category, which is surprising given the price point. ... show more

  • Best Value Chisels On The Market
Narex chisels are one of if not the best values on the market. I own these as well as bench chisels and they perform well. I also own Stanley Sweathearts and I just grab whatever is closer. At this price anyone who woodworks should have a set. I took off one star because they're only offered in metric. While not a big deal I have had a situation or two where I needed to grab a different chisel. Based on some of the questions/answers listed on this page it appears Narex changed their packaging. Others reported these didn't come in a box but packed individually. Mine came in a retail box. I'll try to add a picture. ... show more
