Description

"Should appeal to all rugged individualists who dream of escape to the forest."—The New York Times Book Review Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods—all by himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, and some flint and steel, he intends to survive on his own. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever. “An extraordinary book . . . It will be read year after year.” —The Horn Book Read more

  • Delightful coming-of-age Story
I read this story to my 5th and 6th grade boys. When finished with each chapter, they begged for me to read just one more chapter. It’s clear that the author has thoroughly researched the landscape of the Catskills Mountains. When reading this story, one can learn skills right along with the main character, from cooking with herbs and plants to making fire efficiently. Puts me in the mind of “Swiss Family Robinson”. Overall a captivating story from start to finish. ... show more

  • I recommend this book for teens/preteens
I work with special needs kids at a Junior high, so i am always looking for books that will attract kids to get them to read. I work right among mainstream kids too, so am try to get them to read more also. It is shocking how many kids, when required to read silently in class just fake it (probably half of my classes, in a suburban school). I love this book! I read it as a pre-teen back in the day, and re-read it as an adult many years ago. I was shocked that our school library does not stock it, so i got a copy just to share. This story it amazing, it holds up will with time, even though it was written many years ago. I think all kids, boys or girls can relate to this survival story. ... show more

  • A simple, fun book
I was a voracious reader when I was younger but I've gradually fallen out of the habit, and I'm trying to rekindle my love of books. After reading the fantastic Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon, I wanted a short, simple palate cleanser before I dove into another long book. I bought this book because many people mentioned that they had loved it when they were younger. It's a young adult book so it is a very fast, simple read. The plot is a little idealized, and it shows its age a bit, but overall it's a fun book to read, even for adults. Most importantly, it addresses the yearning for adventure that a lot of us still have. I grew up camping and being in the outdoors, but a lot of the younger generation hasn't been as fortunate. This book will give some of them an idea why going out into the woods and forsaking modern conveniences can be fun. Or, it may just be an interesting story to read. Either way, this book is a winner. ... show more

  • My Side of the Mountain has haunted me
I read it once or more in first grade. It disappeared from the classroom before the school year ended. I've searched for it, not remembering the name or author, until I mentioned it to my youngest sister last night. To find it on Kindle was JOY. I'm now 75 and enjoyed it as much as I did at 7.

  • Wilderness adventure
I am a retired teacher and many years ago another teacher friend and I would read this book with our 5th graders. This book is great for teaching us how to live off the land. It is fiction but shows how to live without all of our daily conveniences at our fingertips.
