There is nothing special about this small tongue drum but it does have some good, and not-so-good, features. Some of the good are: + In addition to the drum, two mallets, finger paddles and a small stand for the mallets are included as well as a zippered storage case and a book that explains how to set up the drum and that has several songs most of which can be played with this 8-note instrument. The pair of mallets are short, but the mallet heads are proportionate to the drum for accurate playing. + The drum can be tuned using instructions for doing so. For those who want accurate intonation the process involves pulling up the tongues and/or filing them. The drum I received did have a few notes that were not accurate when using a tuner, as other reviewers have remarked. But playing the notes in sequence did sound like they were in tune to one another. I played the included popular song, "Can't Help Falling in Love," and it sounded pretty good. + The booklet describes proper set up in case the tongues are not flat to the surface on arrival. I am happy to say that I did not have to do that as the tongues were flat and smooth for the entire drum. A couple of places for improvement: - the song book included does not explain the notation at all. It is easy enough to hammer the numbered tongues but some of the numbers had a dot above or below them and other unfamiliar notation. Perhaps these songs are intended for larger drums, as the only tongue on this drum with the dot above the number was the high 1. - the color is not exactly gold. I would call it a mustard yellow with a tinge of gold. It's not ugly but I would prefer something more golden in color to accompany another steel drum I have in black. All in all, if you're considering sampling a steel tongue drum you may be satisfied with this one. And it does come in different colors! ... show more

I believe this is a very cute and very fun little musical instrument to play with! Reading the instructions was very confusing though. It has instructions on how to tune the drum, and I really am not grasping it. It is still super fun though. The small 1 and the 7 sound exactly the same note to me, so I'm not sure if mine is tuned correctly. Also the large 1 tongue is very loud and the small 1 and 7 and hard to even make an audible tone. I didnt order this for any professional purposes though, so it is fine for me. I just ordered it to play around with it for fun. I'd say that's exactly what this is. Probably a toy quality level drum for just playing around and having fun around the kitchen table with your family. The materials feel durable though, and I like that it came with the drum mallets and the little finger covers to use your fingers with the drum. Though I feel the higher note tongues don't really work with the finger covers since they have to be hit harder to make a nice sound. ... show more

Right out of the gate, this drum is small...6 inches wasn't as big as I thought it would be. Fits pretty much anywhere, so no worries about it taking up too much space. For the most part, it sounds good. I got a variety of notes, and they all rang out well—except one. The top note? Yeah, not so much. You hit it, and it's like it doesn't even want to be there. Now, if you've got kids, this thing's a hit. Easy enough for them to bang on without breaking it, or your eardrums for that matter. It's got a kind of appeal that makes you want to give it a try, no matter your age. It's got a good sound that kept me entertained for a while. Would be a good thing to have around if you like to sample your own sounds for music production. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I'm enchanted with steel tongue drums and have been wanting to try one for myself and for my music loving 2 year old twin grand babies. When I saw this one listed at such a reasonable price, I decided to go for it. I just want to add that I did get the drum free as part of the Vine Review program, but I don't order products that I believe are overpriced, as I always give my honest opinion. This drum is not perfect, but it still sounds pretty good to my untrained ear. The box it comes in is not the most attractive option if you're buying this for a gift, but the drum does come in a nice zippered carrying case and includes mallets, mallet stand, finger picks, and a small songbook. The drum itself is very attractive and the numbered notes are easy to read. It's simple to play with the mallets, and it has nice, melodious sound. I also tried the finger picks. I was able to get them on, but I do have small fingers and I would say they are better suited for children. I tried playing a couple of the songs ( Happy Birthday and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) and some of the notes seem really off to me. I personally do not know how to read or listen to notes, so I don't know if it is the instrument or errors in the book, but I plan to look for more songbooks to try. However, it does have a beautiful, relaxing sound if you're just playing free hand and even the kid banging technique is a much nicer sound than the usual child's Tom drum I'm usually subjected to :) Overall, this is a nice addition to our music shelf. ... show more

I like to collect percussion instruments. This is one I did not have. This steel tongue drum has a unique sound. Each tongue has a different note so you can play a lot of melodies on it. It comes with an instruction book with songs in it with each tongue numbered so you learn to play it. It has two mallets as well and nice little zip case that holds the drum. It would be nice if there were room in the case for the mallets. All and all a fun little percussion instrument. ... show more

The whole family is enjoying playing this MUSCELL Steel Tongue Drum 6 Inches 8 Notes. 6 inches is pretty small, but is great for children. We got the navy and would recommend getting a lighter color so it is easier to see the numbering of the different notes and play songs. It is a full scale of notes that is mostly tuned correctly. The tones are sweet and mellow, though they don't last terribly long, and the upper notes aren't pure/single - there is some overlap sound from the neighboring notes. It's sturdy and comes as a nice set with the carrying case, finger paddles, mallets, and mallet stand. The sound is soothing and delightful; overall we like having this little drum. ... show more
