  • Good Item at Value Pricing for light Duty Only
Style: 14" x 40"
So far this appears to be a value. Delivered in good condition no damage well packed. Requires some assembly and my need some assistance do to weight. Ok, only two issue but Minor the large locknut needed to lockdown the rear centering bar was missing and the # 3 Allen wrench was actually a #4. Other than that no problems. However Pay attention to the WARNING label. This has a inexpensive motor and extremely sensitive to HEAT and will “burn out” if you operate under a load for 30 minutes or more or under a heavy turning load like a big bowel so Keep that in mind. That’s the only serious issue I think you will have, over heating the motor will destroy the .5 hr motor in minutes if run for excessively running more than 30 minutes at a time especially if under a heavy load. Update: it’s still going strong, motor holding up, don’t expect the chisels to be any good they go dull looking at them, so plan on getting some good quality Ones. the shorter the length of your project will reduces vibrations, anything over 25” will vibrate unless we’ll centered. I’m satisfied with this lathe as a newbie to turning. It requires good tools to turn hardwoods, and changing belt for speeds is a pain in the b…. Basically it’s a good beginner lathe to learn the basics. Hope this review helped, I realize that a lot of negative comments were submitted do to shipping conditions, DOA, stopped working shortly after starting, which do not relate to my experience but I attempted to address those in my comments. ... show more

  • Does the job, but you had better be ready to modify this thing
Style: 14" x 40"
This is an updated from the review I submitted several days ago.... So the product arrived with all parts as advertised. Purchased for its length (40") to turn wood baseball bats. There have been a few problems, (1) the tool rest adjustment slips, and forces the tool rest to its lowest setting when you place downward force on it. So the allen bolt holding the vertical shaft in place does not hold. Its been very difficult to make much progress. (2) the back spindle wheel begins to loosen once you turn on the machine. You need to get a stop bolt to prevent this problem, otherwise your wood will come off, (3) it is very difficult to balance a 37" bat blank. The lathe extension does not appear to be properly aligned with the drive end. Finding the center of the bat blank is easy with a center finder, but just doing this doesn't seem to help. All in all, i give this 2 stars. Maybe its ok for the price, but I'm concerned that it won't perform at the level i need it to. Update: After making additional modifications, i.e. (1) using a chunk of treated 2x4 with a drilled hole to replace the metal plate that came with the tool rest, (2) using another chunk of 2x4 to prop up the tool rest on the far horizontal side of the frame (which gets it closer to the wood, and (3) setting the tool rest directly on the near horizontal span of the frame so that it cannot slip out of the bottom hole, and (4) getting new lag bolts, washers, and wingnuts to make those modifications work, i was able to turn two wood bats. Also, I was able to adjust the belts in the motor casing to give the drive more torque so that it wouldn't stop (as often at least) when applying too much pressure to the wood. The wood bats took quite a while to make, but once I was able to rig the lathe by adjusting and stabilizing the tool rest. The tool rest continues to loosen and twist, but i just twist the knob every 15 second or so, but at least it no longer drops out of the bottom hole because its resting direct on the frame. Also, finding the center of the wood bat blank is really critical, and the more material you scrape off the blank the steadier it gets. The spindle end still tries to loosen, but the nut i installed prevents the spindle from completely loosening and causing the wood to fall off. Also, you need to let the motor cool down after about 45 minutes of stop and go use. The 3 tools it came with actually worked fairly well, but I had to get a new parting tool. Overall, I now give the product 3.5 stars. The motor isn't powerful enough to turn a bat as efficiently as you see in the YouTube videos, you need to let it rest so it doesn't overheat, the tool rest is workable with modifications etc. But with additional time and precision you can get it done. And you can't beat the price. Update (10.7.2024): The machine is still work fine. I bought pretty nice set of chiseling tools with multiple skew and chisel sizes, and also benchtop grinder. After sharpening the original tools that came with the machine, I actually find they work better for some reason. Made about 6 baseball bats now, got my 7th on the lathe now. Got rid of the tool rest that came with it because too much hassle unscrewing to move its back and forth between the two ends, and it wasn't steady enough. Made new longer tool rest our of treated 2 x 4s. (see new pic, bat is not detailed or sanded) ... show more

  • Not worth it + Misleading Advertising
Style: 14" x 40"
I've used this lathe off and on for just a little more than a year, and it has a host of problems that a better lathe wouldn't have. For on it stopped working and its barely a year old, it too weak, and the advertising is lying to you. Other folks have had this issue but the button went from only working sometimes and the motor being a little weaker to TOTAL failure. Its unusable and I did not even use the lathe heavily, the button still audible clicks when its moved into place but instead of doing nothing sometimes, the lathe doesn't turn on, if the motor is still alive in there the on/off switch shouldn't be the failure point that stops my $170 tool from working. The motor is far too weak, despite the extra length the bed gives you anything too large and the motor cannot handle the weight. I'd say anything above 3 pounds wont spin fast enough to work on. So having a 40in bed does not fit to the motor's capabilities. In an attempt to fix the lathe I opened and looked at the motor and found that the motor is WEAKER than ADVERTISED. And weakness of the motor wouldn't be a problem if they HADN'T LIED about it. But they did to get more people to buy while saving on the cost of a 400W motor. Do not buy this, spend the extra money $100 dollars and get yourself one that will last 10 years not one. ... show more
