6/3/2015. I just received this item and tried it on my drip irrigation system. It doesn't work in that after a half an hour, the bottle of fertilizer was still full. Also, trying to maintain a vertical position for the bottle proved hard to do. The weight of the full bottle caused the bottle's position to rotate off the vertical even though I tightened all the connections as tight as possible using slip pliers. My irrigation system has about 200 1/2 gallon/hour ejectors. I've read somewhere that Miracle gro recommends that you have at least 10 such emitters for this item to work. I will attempt to contact Miracle Gro for help in this matter, but for now, this item does not work, and I'll be returning it if Miracle gro can't get this thing to work. 6/4/2015. I want to update my comments about the universal feeder. I had called customer service at Miracle-Gro and was well treated in that they would send out a new feeder and I could return the old one , cost free to me. The person I talked with was very courteous and cooperative. However, after I made that call I felt that my specific irrigation system might not be compatible with the feeder, and that I might be able to make changes that would allow the feeder to work. My irrigation system is laid out as follows: I have a watering timing device attached to the spigot followed by a 200-250 foot hose which leads to my raised bed garden (36'x12'). I have a feeder hose along the 36' side of the garden. Attached to this are 19 drip emitter hoses, each about 12' long. The emitters each emit 0.5 gallons/hour, and there are about 200 of them. Between the end of the 200' hose from the house and the feeder hose in the garden I had a pressure reducer that keeps the pressure in the garden at 30 psi. When this was the system in use, the Miracle-Gro universal feeder attached at the spigot, after the timer, did not work, that is; no fluid emptied out of the fertilizer bottle used with the feeder. I found that the water pressure at the feeder was 70psi when the system was flowing. I then added a pressure reducer and a back-flow preventer just upstream from the fertilizer feeder, turned the water on, and got some flow from the fertilizer bottle. I knew this because occasional bubbles would rise in the bottle, but the rate of flow was quite slow and was associated with a water pressure of ~30psi. Next, I removed the pressure reducer located at the garden, leaving the system with only one pressure reducer, that being located just upstream from the fertilizer feeder, turned the water on and measured the pressure. Now the fertilizer bottle was emptying at a rate of about 1/2 the bottle per hour, and the associated water pressure was not really measurable with my gauge which doesn't measure pressures below ~5psi very well. My conclusions regarding the Miracle-Gro universal feeder are that it works well when the system it is applied to has no pressure reducers downstream from it, but does have a pressure reducer upstream from it. I'm positive about the first part of my conclusions. I'm not absolutely certain that an upstream pressure reducer is necessary, but I think it is likely to be. Finally, I was able to obtain and maintain a vertical position of the feeder bottle by using slip pliers to tighten all fittings. I found no leaks, and the product now works as advertised. I do think that that advertising should include information concerning how to use or not use pressure reducers so as not to affect the utility of the universal feeder. ... show more

  • Food leaks out
I love the concept and ease of use, but the liquid food is pricey because when not in use it leaks out, so I average 2-3 feeds per bottle. So I started refilling with the powder mix to still use but less cost

  • Two new ones didn't work for me
I had an older one of these, that I left out in the yard for a few seasons and it stopped working. Ok, so I bought a new one, and it didn't ever make the characteristic 'tick tick tick tick' sound and didn't work. Returned to Amazon, got a replacement. It _does_ make the tick-tick sound, but doesn't 'suck' liquid out of the bottles. (using the new bottle that came with the 'kit') I read someone else said they took the rubber bit out of the bottle, and then it worked - which also worked in my case. Super annoying, though. You _can_ refill the bottles - unsupported, they obviously want you to buy them - pop off the green cap with a flathead screwdriver, fill with liquid fertilizer. I usually mix powdered fertilizer with water, then run the solution through a coffee filter to make sure I don't put big pieces of powder in the system. Has worked for 10's or 100's of bottles worth with the old one. To be seen how the new one, that didn't suck the liquid out of the bottle it came with works in the long term. (I give it 4 stars for 'value for the money' because if you get it working and refill your own bottles it's cost effective, I'd give it 1 star if I was paying full price for the bottles) ... show more

  • Great Idea
Nice little system to inject fertilizer into the water while watering your plants. It has a little pump built into the system, powered by the flow of water from the tap, so that the greater the flow of water, the faster the pump pumps. That means that no matter the flow rate, you get a consistent percentage of fertilizer added to the water. I have used the Miracle-Gro hose end mixer with the blue crystals, but the spray concentration is not uniform from beginning to end, starting out more concentrated and then getting weak at the end. It is also heavy and unwieldy and not well suited to watering individual containers. Using this Universal Feeder with a good water wand is much easier and effective. The only problem in my view was buying the little bottles of fertilizer to use with the system. It does not make sense to be shipping water around the country, when I have plenty of water available at my house. Also, the bottles are pretty small and run out in about fifteen minutes, so I needed to keep an eye on the fertilizer level to be sure that I still had some fertilizer left in the bottle. I also did not like the idea of only using a bottle once and then throwing it away. That seems wasteful to me. I dealt with these issues by adapting one of the little bottles so that I could mix up my own fertilizer and then add it to the bottle. I also expanded the capacity of the system by adding a gallon bottle to the little bottle. This way, I can mix up a batch of fertilizer a gallon at a time and water for an hour or more without worrying about running out of fertilizer. Mixing the blue crystals one to one with water produces a concentration that is identical to that found in the LiquaFeed bottles, since the crystals have exactly twice the N-P-K as the liquid in the bottles. I did this by gluing the cap from an empty gallon bottle to the bottom of a LiquaFeed bottle. Then I drilled a hole through the cap and the bottom of the LiquaFeed bottle so that the two bottles were interconnected. The bottom of the LiquaFeed bottle is thick tough plastic, so I you try my method, start with a small drill and work up to a larger drill size to get an appropriate size hole. See my photo of the cap for the size of hole that I ended p with. I also cut a flap in the bottom of the gallon bottle. This helps in two ways. First, it allows air into the bottle so the fertilizer flows freely and the large bottle does not collapse as the liquid is removed. It also gives me an access point so that I can use a funnel to fill up the bottle without having to remove the bottle from the feeder each time. The two bottles glued together is a bit top heavy, so I have used a bungee cord to support the bigger bottle against a fence. See the photo that shows the bungee cord holding the gallon bottle section upright. So far, it has been working great and my plants have really thrived by receiving all the fertilizer. I have been using it a lot more often than every two weeks but there is no sign of burning or over fertilization, so the Universal Feeder System must dilute the concentration of the fertilizer down enough so that you can use the system quite often. I am using the fertilizer about every other watering and since all I have to do is turn the selector switch, it makes it more likely that I will fertilize than if I had to remove and attach a bottle of LiquaFeed every time I wanted to fertilize my plants. Update 4/27/17: I have found that you can simply pry the top off of the little Miracle-Gro bottles and insert the top into a regular 2 liter soda bottle. I did that for a while, but the 2 liter soda bottle is thin and fragile and tends to collapse as the liquid is sucked out of the bottle. I found a sturdier bottle with the same neck size as the Miracle-Gro bottle and the 2 liter bottle. The neck size must be fairly standard. The one I found was a bottle in an Asian food store that held an aloe vera drink. As our British cousins would say, "Works a treat!" Please check out new photos to see how it works. ... show more
