  • Great Linux tablet, advice on stylus, and non-repairability
Installed Fedora Linux immediately after receiving it, and just about everything works out of the box. Automatic screen rotation doesn't (might be fixable, haven't checked), and physical volume buttons must be remapped in order to work when keyboard is detached, but otherwise perfect. Super fast, super nice screen (albeit LCD, not OLED, but I wouldn't expect otherwise at this price point), and the keyboard is great. If you plan on using this tablet for art, I don't recommend installing the provided screen protector. I was trying to figure out why my lines were so jittery with my Wacom stylus, then I tried removing the screen protector which immediately solved the problem. The only reason I'm not giving this product 5 stars is because it is completely non-repairable. if the SSD or battery need to be replaced, there's no non-destructive way to open the device. I'm not even sure if a replacement battery could be sourced for this tablet if you could open it. ... show more

  • Finally, a Surface competitor that can run Linux well...
For years, I've dipped into and out of the Surface line due to the admittedly incredible hardware quality, but using Windows has increased in annoyance over the last eighteen months. Setting up a Windows device in 2024 requires hours of work on the front end to disable unwanted cloud components and monitoring software. (Another review laid this fault at the feet of Minisforum, but Microsoft is responsible for this nonsense—if you don't believe me, try installing Windows 11 on a newly built desktop PC). Recently, at the provocation of Microsoft's integration of Copilot bloat- and spy-ware at the core of the OS, I decided I would shift toward free and open-source software as much as possible; this of course means Linux. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of high-quality and high-powered 2-in-1 devices out there that can run Linux. The Star Labs Starlite comes to mind immediately as an option, but it lacks the power I'm seeking in such a device. In terms of hardware compatibility with acceptable horsepower, though, the clamshell laptop form factor allowed significantly more options. The Framework 13 (my device before this one) served my purposes, but the flexibility to turn my computer into a tablet at will is a big deal to me. Enter the Minisforum V3. I was delighted to learn that this tablet existed, and that by all accounts its Linux compatibility blew comparable devices out of the water. I installed Fedora Linux with ease, and everything significant worked out of the box. What small things didn't work (volume buttons, mostly), some enterprising souls have already sorted (see the awesome-minisforum-v3 Github for more on that). In Fedora, the computer flies; the powerful processor and 32GB of memory do their work exceptionally well. For my use cases (teaching and research), I struggle to imagine a better device and cannot recommend this one highly enough. There are a few drawbacks. As other reviewers have noted, this device is not easily reparable. The keyboard and kickstand are fine, but they're nowhere near Microsoft's offerings in terms of engineering or quality. In Fedora, auto-rotate doesn't work (yet), and the on-screen keyboard is (there's no getting around it) bad. But those are software issues that I imagine someone could fix, and they're certainly not Minisforum's fault. Overall, I think this 2-in-1 showcases spectacular effort. It's well-designed and solid, powerful, and flexible in both software and use-case. I strongly recommend that anyone looking for a Linux device with this form factor give this a try. ... show more

  • Won't turn on.
I got it in let it charge for 2 hours and it won't turn on. Amazon customer support was no help. They expect me to wait 2 days to hear from the manufacturer. I tried to return it and they will only do UPS pickup. I don't know about the rest of you but I have a job, I can't sit at home and wait for UPS. I can't believe I paid $1000 for something and this is where I'm left. I sold my laptop to pay for this thing and now I have nothing. I guess I'll just wait 2 days for nothing. ... show more

  • Value is not there
long story short - this is a $400 tablet milking $1000 out of you through the Ryzen hype. Negatives: - Out of the box you will be greeted with a toxic stench of rubber and chemicals, i had to air the room out by the time Windows finished setting up. - This thing is loud with a sound of obnoxious whistling diesel engine packed into a laptop. I can hear this thing whistling in the room from the kitchen. - - *edit, slept on the couch, got kicked out of the bedroom with this thing. - It is not serviceable. When someone tells me M.2 2280, i think ability to replace. You will not open this thing without special tools and heater without breaking it. - - *how convenient of them to remove 2280 from the description... - It is heavy, it is way past the point of weight saving. At this weight point might as well implement removable back cover and add thickness to help with heat. - Magnetic keyboard, this is the cheapest plastic-fantastic i have seen in a while. If you have a burning nostalgia for early 2000's - this is for you! - - Key layout and size is terrible, cant move on the table without it disconnecting, also mine is bent inwards and flops side to side as i type. - Fingerprint magnet, it is bad, like bad bad. - "More that -You- We See" logo will greet you every single time... At this point i have seen enough of it. - 2 and half hours of removing W11 bloatware, going back to M2 and serviceability. - WIFI is bad, two devices in the same room, same spot - V3 is barely getting 1/4 of the signal strength and speed of my old Lenovo. - Overall quality ... did i mention 400$ laptop already? - In a few month market will be flooded with laptops with the same processor in sub-$900 price range. *edit: it crashes a lot. Positive: - It is a device with a good processor, that worked. What can i say? ... show more
