I purchased this small chain hoist as I use it to remove the top portion of our jet skis when servicing them. I had purchased another similar hoist that worked great but it looks like it grew legs and walked away. This one doesn't work as well as the ratching mechanism seems to be a bit more finicky however this one was about 70% the price of the other so I went with it. One big complaint is that the chain is not galvanized or coated but looks like it came right from the mill without being cleaned. Expect to have black hands after handling it or cleaning it so it doesn't get all over you. ... show more

I ordered this hoist for light duty work around the shop and yard. It arrives in a convenient case that I doubt will get much use for me but is still a nice addition. Let's just make this clear, this is definitely a light duty hoist so don't order it for heavy lifting. It says its rated to 550 lbs., but I don't know if I would even trust it to that extent other than if I was lifting something I didn't mind potentially dropping and it was in a safe spot. A few points to address. First, the part of the chain that mounts to a base uses a plastic handle which is very lightweight and frankly I don't think very reliable looking. I plan on swapping it out for a metal ring or other type of hook because I don't like relying on plastic to secure things that will be hanging from above. The next thing is the switch for lowering and raising which feels a little looser than I would prefer, it works but I suggest treating it with care. The third thing is that regardless of which way I put the switch, if I put too much force on the chain it can still pull through even though it should be locked to prevent it. A final note is that the handle can get in the way depending on where you place it, not a big deal but needs to be planned ahead when using. Now with all of that said, I still don't mind this hoist as long as it is used within the guidelines and with a little common sense.
