Description

NEW TO METAL DETECTING? Want to start hunting without a long learning curve? This Quickstart Guide will have you out in the field and hunting productively in just a few hours! This isn’t an exhaustive guide to everything you’ll ever want to know about metal detecting. It’s not a complete course in treasure hunting. It’s a quick read from a detectorist who’s been swinging a machine long enough to know how to do it successfully, but who hasn’t forgotten what it feels like to be just beginning and needing a place to start smart. You know you’re just itching to get your detector out in the field to find all kinds of cool stuff, but who wants to wade through a thick book or watch a hundred videos first? If you have a detector and a few simple accessories, you can start reading this handy little Quickstart Guide while you eat breakfast, and be digging your first target before lunch! Then use the resources provided to learn how to identify your finds. Though this book was written by an American author and primarily references laws and cultural norms of the United States, all other covered subject matter applies to other countries. Everything you need to get out there for a productive hunt is between these two covers—101 proven tips (Actually, WAY more than that!) from the author’s personal experience with the equipment: finding hunting spots; staying safe, comfortable and legal; the culture and the people; even a glossary, so you can speak the language of passionate diggers. Plus, you get a section of Bonus Material: A list of the same resources the author uses to stay current in the hobby! So, lose those newbie blues: Read this guide and get out there, for memorable days of saving history. Happy hunting! Read more

  • Great Beginner's Book!
As a neofite detector myself, I looked online for information about detecting, detectors and related information. This is a great starters guide to the "sport" of metal detecting, and will open up this fun pastime for anyone who's interested, at whatever level of interest. Thanks, Mary, for sharing your experience and knowledge to newcomers in the field of detecting! ... show more

  • Quick & interesting read that any beginner should preview whom is interested tn this exiting hobby!
As billed this is a great book for beginning metal detecting! It covers a host of topics but is short on technical data and signal analysis, coils, etc....ergo 4-Stars! That being said, it explicitly tells one proper etiquette, some basic metal detecting terminology, and most importantly to do one's homework via map recons, historical data, museum and library archives, if one wants to be successful in finding artifacts , coins, etc..... Finally, the most important thing is read the directions that come with one's metal detector! Per the author, the most expensive metal detector is not required, if one reads and learns how to property operate their metal detector, and in fact practices- like anything else! It is a quick and interesting read that any beginner should preview whom is interested tn this exiting hobby! ... show more

  • Lots of Information
I bought this book thinking I had a grasp on how and what to do metal detecting and well I am embarrassed to say I really had no idea what I thought I knew and am super happy I bought this book , I was just going to glance at the book but once I opened it and started reading it before I knew it I read the whole book and will lend this copy to family and friends and will surely recommend it to any new detector owners . ... show more

  • Not very informative. Explores the subject from less then a beginners understanding. Didn't much new material.
I am a beginner but you will find better information online. The book has a lot of experience in the art of detecting but doesn't go into any detail. Would have loved a few stories on finds and how they were discovered to get the engine running. It just didn't move me to get out there and hunt. Also very short and could have been little more comprehensive. Found it repetitive on certain subjects offering not really more insight into the subject when exploring it a second time. Lots and lots of fillers. Could have been 3 pages for what you get. ... show more

  • Short, sweet and to the point!
I got this book just as I got my first metal detector. I have not used the detector yet, but I think I'm ready! I loved how easy this book was to understand. Most of all, I have gotten a few other detectorist books and this one is the only one that doesn't have numerous spelling and grammar errors that tweak my brain while reading. I know that isn't important to a lot of people, but it really affects my enjoyment of something I read. Definitely recommend! ... show more

  • Basic info
It was truthful information, but very basic. Well, it said beginner. Needs a follow-up edition for more detailed detecting.
