  • Stephen Fry, wonderful story teller
I am a huge fan of everything Stephen Fry does. He is a treasure to our time. He is open-hearted, kind, knowledgeable and a great human being. Sitting down with this book is like having tea with Stephen. What a wonderful experience. The subject of the book is Greek Mythology. You would think that Ovid and other authors have beat that old horse to death. But, Stephen breathes new life into these stories. His prodigious store of knowledge finds its way into every story. You marvel and laugh and are even shocked by the stories. Very worth while book. Please read it. There is one negative I suppose. It is not a novel. There is no real plot to keep you enthralled. Instead, I find that I have not sat down with Stephen for a while. So that brings me back to the book. What story do you have for me today? ... show more

  • Make room on your bookshelf
Carried this very heavy hardcover overseas in my carry-on because I was mid-read. TOTALLY worth it. Stephen Fry breaks down even unfamiliar myths and relates them hysterically to modern life and speech. Only criticism is an unavoidable feature of a comprehensive volume: LOTS and LOTS of Greek characters and place names that are difficult to keep straight. ... show more

  • Fabulous and Fun Recasting of Familiar Mythology
An absolutely amazing book! Stephen Fry's humor, excellent writing style, and strong knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology combine to make this book a great read as well as a great reference. Everyone of a certain age has read or used Bullock and Hamilton, and they continue to be valuable if humorless references. Fry, though, provides great fun as well as accurate information. This should be the new mythology reference book of today ... show more

  • Comedic point of view.
I am not familiar with Fry and his work. I originally owned the book “Oh My Gods!” By Phillip Freeman which I loved but lost, So I’ve bought this book for a couple of months ago, and honestly I haven’t really read it until today. Unfortunately, I’m gonna have to give this book a 2/5. The author’s writing style is a comedic point of view. And a lot of these stories aren’t comedy. So I can’t really appreciate it the way I usually do. Knowing now about Stephen Fry’s work I would haven’t bought this book. But it seems that a lot of people appreciate this style, it’s just not for me, especially when telling Greek stories that I love so much. ... show more

  • Most entertaining primer
I've always wanted to increase my knowledge of Greek mythology, but didn't know where to start and felt overwhelmed. This retelling was charming and entertaining, rarely feeling instructive.

  • The Full Monty
Like Fry, I was captivated by ancient mythology at and early age and kept in touch later in life through Renaissance art and 18th century literature. However, my focus was on things Roman and Latin; the Attic world being hidden away via a steep staircase. I do love Fry’s asides and he doesn’t avoid controversial tales and seems to revel in them. And he does mention many, many characters. I fault him for shortchanging Hercules, one of my favorites and defaults one star. ... show more

  • A charming book about the Greek myths
Stephen Fry is a truly talented writer. This book is a charming and readable tale of the Greek myths. Do not skip the footnotes--they are informative and often entertaining, and there are not so many as to detract from reading the text. While the Kindle version (which I purchased) contains the maps and artwork, the Kindle format does not do them justice. The hardcover is a beautiful book. ... show more
