Came out of the box ready for my use: measuring temperatures of solid items like batteries and other car parts. Check the photo. That's my glass of ice water temp as I sit here and write. It has many other capabilities that I may need in the future. I needed to solve the problem of temperature of the batteries in my electric car. I use 48 lithium cells in series. I have a built-in temperature measuring but it was reading what seemed too high. This infrared thermometer showed that all lithium cells were 72 degrees which was normal. The built-in system was giving me erroneous readings like 89 deg for 4 of them. I was able to repair the built-in temperature probe thanks to this infrared thermometer. Seriously, all I had to do was install the thermometer's AAA cells, pull the trigger and read. Later I compared it to my Taylor oven thermometer and its really close. We got this for the grill, and he uses it every time he grills, it’s his favorite grill tool! The accuracy is spot on, considering what thermometers cost this isn’t a bad price! It only takes maybe three seconds to get the temp of something! The battery has lasted about 3/4 months now and no sign of it getting low! (Coming from someone who cooks for a living, thermometers don’t usually last!!) ... show more

    • Probe Connection Failed after 2 days

I bought this to test my coolers, and have taken about 20 IR readings so far. I like the way it works. As far as I can tell, the readings are accurate enough for home use. However, the probe feature only functioned for about 2 days (about 5 readings) before the display reads "noP" where the probe's reading would be. I have tried inserting the probe before setting the mode as well as after setting the mode, but it is still reading "noP". The connector feels loose, and I suspect that's the actual problem. I have docked two stars because of this quality issue. I have learned that to read air temperature, it is better to use a probe (not IR), and that's the reason I bought this unit.
