  • returning to double edge shaving (im 73) after years or cartrige use
have used this now for a week and what a delight to use. so far have used the one setting. (supper mild) setting 1 and get a really close shave. i have been converted. feels great and clean again. i used the enclosed blade which was ok but switched to feather brand recently. i can feel the difference and will stick to feather. there is a trick to getting the center shaft back in the handle if you happen to pull in out. there is a ring with a gap at the bottom. you need to make sure this spins free and pinch the ring tight with finger and thumb otherwise you will not be able to reassemble ... show more

  • I finally got the stubbles on my Adam's apple
I finally got the stubbles on my Adam's apple. I used a Gillette Silver Blue blade with this razor set on number 5. I still want to try a Feather blade which they say is sharper, but the Gillette Silver Blue blade made in Russia did work without any nicks. Note something interesting about the Gillette Silver Blue blades ... they have four of the corners numbered from 1 to 4 ... that way if you want to keep the same orientation or if you want to rotate the blades position between cleanings, then you can do that. UPDATE 4/14/2014 There is TRIANGULAR mark on the bottom section with the handle. There is DASH or MINUS mark on the top section with the two post where the blade goes. The top and bottom sections can be put together in two ways. 1. With the triangle and dash marks aligned. OR 2. With the marks on opposite sides. This determines how the male threaded bolt fits into the female threaded handle. Bottom Line: With the two marks together on the same side, The adjustment index will indicate from least aggressive to max aggressive as 1,2,3,4,5 With the two marks NOT on the SAME side, The adjustment index will indicate from least aggressive to max aggressive as 3,4,5,1,2 It's no big deal. With the screw and the white cap turned fully clockwise (head is lowered to bottom or tight), you have the least aggressive cut. With the screw turned several turns counter-clockwise from the bottom or tight position (head is raised) and you have the most aggressive cut. If you want the read-out to be 1,2,3,4,5, then have the two marks matched up triangle and dash. Three will be the MIDDLE setting If the marks are NOT matched up, the razor will still cut and fully clockwise with the head lowered will still be the least aggressive. It's just that the INDEX numbers will shown as 3,4,5,1,2 Five will be the MIDDLE setting. Second Bottom Line: JUST ALIGN THE TWO MARKS UP EVERYTIME and be done with it. I have the Progress, the Slant, the Open Comb and if I only had ONE RAZOR, It would be the Adjustable Progress I use a three setting for the first couple of passes and the five for the last pass. ... show more

  • My go to razor
I own 9 double edged razors ,and this, combined with a feather platinum tipped stainless blade works great. All of my razors including the Merkur 180 long handle , Edwin Jagger De89, Merkur Futur do a good job on the first 2/3rds of my face. My neck is a different animal altogether. I never really noticed how hair grows at different angles and thickness in different areas of the face until I went old school wet shaving. I always left stubble on my neck no matter what I did or what blade I used (mostly Feather stainless platinum). My Gillette Pro glide did no better but I never really checked. In and out in one pass and done. Now wet shaving is more of a science. You really get to know your face and beard. This is the only razor that could get my neck just on both sides of the trachea. These whiskers grow sideways or horizontal and my neck gets razor burn quite easily. So a need a sharp effective razor that can do the job in 2 passes and this does it with no problem when dialed on the 2.5 setting or sometimes 3. Beyond 3 with a Feather blade the nicks start to come. Its still not 100% baby smooth in that area but significantly improved. We all know with wet shaving their are all sorts of variables such as pre shave prep, shaving cream, wetting with a good brush and hot towel, showering before shaving or even while showering if you have a mirror there. I've tried most of it and in the end the Progress is a winner. Size adjustability build quality weight distribution all contribute to a nice close shave. Before you even shave you'll know what I mean. After you shave there is no question about what razor comes on your next trip. This is the best all around razor. I will try the slant razor next. I like the Futur but its big and I won't even think about the Vision until they bring it's bulk down. I can go in setting one for most of my face and between 2-3 for my problem neck area. Solves my shaving crisis. Thanks Merkur this is a remarkable shaving instrument. ... show more
