Good quality and has good even weight to it.

  • Works well, looks great, high quality and recommended for the novice and the experts
Great looking (vintage?) 3-piece razor. I love that it has the same head as the Merkur 23C, which is my favorite razor. I was interested in the shorter handle to see if it gave a different shaving experience, which it does (easy to maneuver). I think this would be a great razor for the novices out there as well as the more experienced users. ... show more

  • Slippery
I am a woman that uses a safety razor, because for the cost of 100 razor blades I can only get about 4 women's razors! The pink tax is a real thing people! That being said, I have been trying to find the "perfect" safety razor. THIS one is both my favorite and my least favorite. Let me explain The positive is that the angle of the blade is AMAZING. I have YET to cut myself with this razor. The shave it provides is smooth and easy. A couple of passes, and my legs feel like a brand new baby's butt. The negative is that the handle is not nearly heavy enough. It is also a tad too short, and it's SLIPPERY as hell. I'm making it work, but am seriously considering finding a way to add some weight to the handle, and scratching it up or something, so my wet hands don't slip on the handle any more. ... show more

  • Looks very cool but doesn’t grip well.
I love the look of this razor but decided to trade it in for a Merkur 34C. The 34c has the same razor head but a different (much better) handle. Turns out the handle grip matters quite a bit.

  • Outstanding razor that maintains the reputation of the company.
I can't give this a full 5 on the "for beginners" criteria, because I'm not entirely sure that any safety razor is "for beginners". This one is great though. It has great size and weight, and gives a low-effort great shave - in my experience. Definitely better than the vintage safety razor that I was using prior to my upgrade. If you really want a BBS finish, you are going to have to do a 2-3 pass (depending on your own beard growth). But that is true of any razor in my experience. Would recommend. Would buy again (though based on the quality, I don't think I will need to). ... show more

  • "Mildest" razor in my sizable collection. Great for beginners.
I love it for what it is, that being an incredibly "mild" DE safety razor. This razor is excellent for beginners who are dipping their toes into the world of wet shaving, at a great price I actually have ultra-sensitive skin (I know everbody says this), but also bulletproof stubble... so finding a good combination of razor and razor blade is a challenge. This razor lets me use sharper, more aggressive blades, while managing just how aggressive my shave is by being a very mild razor. I won't be using it for every shave, but it is definitely top 3 in my collection. ... show more

  • Great Razor for a great price
I just love all Merkur Razors. I actually purchased this razor for the head to use on another handle. I have a very stout handle I acquired from Maggard Razors. I bought the MR8 handle with their least aggressive head. I loved the handle, but the head was just a bit too aggressive for my skin. The head wasn't like the Merkur 34C HD (Heavy Duty), which is my favorite razor and it is not aggressive for my sensitive skin. Someone gave me great advice to look for a Vintage Gillette Tech double edge razor head because it not that aggressive and inexpensive. So I started looking, but in the back of my mind I had some concerns. Pricing, aggressiveness and how sanitary will it be. It's not like I did not trust the person but I knew I loved my Merkur and a used head was a little worrisome because I needed to find out how to completely sterilize it, plus the pricing of the Vintage heads were around $20, so I thought why not look for a Merkur head because I have read that Merkur uses the 34C head on many models. It was really hard to find the Merkur head alone, but then I a thought I should try a three piece that may have the same head as the 34C and I believe I found it with the C42. It is very hard to confirm my findings, about the C42 and the 34C HD heads to be the exact same. Many people said it is the same, but it feels a little different, but damn close. Anyway, the Merkur 34C HD as great as it is, it is a two piece razor, which means you are kind of stuck with that handle and cannot take the head to another handle. Here comes the C42, which at the price is an incredible bargain. It is very easy to say for beginners in Double Edge shaving try the Merkur 34C HD and you would not be wrong in any way. The price ranges anywhere from $29 to $60, which is not bad for a starter (Go shopping because it fluctuates, I got it for just under $30 on Amazon). If you are even on a tighter budget you cannot go wrong with the Merkur C42, which I landed for just over $22 from Amazon. I hope this helps out someone. ... show more
