Updated: return process was easy. Replacement arrived next day and UPS picked up old one next day and brought their own label to put on box. Replacement puzzle worked perfectly. The song segments are just the right length - brief enough for the short attention spans but get through the verse once. The volume is adequate and not too loud. This puzzle uses the small red peg knows that require a toddler to use or practice their pincer grasp. The puzzle is thick and sturdy. I like the on/off switch. All M&D puzzles now use a high quality sticker on top so younger toddlers should be monitored and redirected when trying to mouth the pieces so as not to ruin the picture on the puzzle piece. Does not work, even in bright light. Product arrived quickly. No dents or scratches. Immediately ran out to drug store to buy brand new batteries. Switch on back turned to "on" and double checked batteries in correct orientation. I have tried under several bright lights in the house. Nothing. Hoping the company will reach out to replace. Meanwhile I'll call Amazon. Will update review to report response. ... show more

I purchased the puzzle for working with two-year-olds. The puzzle works best with new batteries. I tried a cheaper battery option and the song did not play well. The two-year-olds loved revealing each part of the bus piece, as the song played and they sang along. The two-years olds were able to use their fingers to grab the knobbed puzzle piece and placed the puzzle piece in the insert. The media could not be loaded. My child loves it. In half a day, she was able to figure out how to put together puzzles correctly. She is 17 months old. This is exactly what I was looking for for her age. The only cons that I noticed is that the animals always start making sounds when the child brings something to it. It could just be her hand or a wrong image of another animal. For example, if you bring a cat to a dog, the cat still barks. This can be confusing for a child who is just learning about animals. It would be nice if, in case of an error, there will be some other sound or something like "oops, it's not right, let's try again". ... show more

I bought this for my 19 month old granddaughter because she loves animals, I love all Melissa and Doug toys because they are well made and priced right. I read some of the reviews on the puzzle before I bought it and I almost didn’t buy it because some of the reviews stated that the puzzle is “ Possessed “ and just goes off at random times, or sometimes the animals didn’t make the sound at all. Anyway since I have bought several items of theirs before for my grandchildren I went ahead and bought it, it arrived and worked great, then it didn’t. I called the number on the back of the puzzle and I have to say that their customer service is amazing, come to find out that each piece is light sensitive and if you are playing with it in a room that is a normal lit room then it works perfectly, my granddaughters bedroom at night is dark but has a nightlight so if the pieces weren’t in the puzzle and you went in and turned on the light the animals would make their sounds because the sensor on the puzzle piece is sensitive to light. We now have the puzzle out in the living room with most of her other toys and we haven’t had a problem since. When I spoke to the customer service representative he said that they are using this feedback to possibly have this information on the package. I am glad I bought this puzzle and called customer service before writing my review since I know reading reviews on products will sometimes sway someone’s purchase when all that is needed is a phone call to customer service, which I know takes time, but I would rather give a good review to a good product than a bad or mediocre review to a good product because I didn’t make the call.
