Features

  • Low pitch with clear attack sold in pairs, the Meinl Percussion African Hardwood Claves deliver a deep wood tone with low fundamental pitch typically heard in African rhythms and dance music these claves cut through the mix with a rich wood tone
  • Solid hardwood made with solid hardwood, these claves produce articulate, sharp accents that project strongly so their sound is easily heard on stage and in the audience the wood is extraordinarily durable and has naturally musical acoustic properties
  • Versatile sound great to use for traditional African and Latin American music, rock, pop, concert band and even orchestral music (live or in the studio) these claves also work great in larger ensemble settings like classroom band and drum circles
  • African style the body and striker measure 10" long, but the 1 1/4" diameter body is larger than the 7/8" diameter striker to produce a lower pitch the body also has a smooth notch for more resonance and volume (this notch faces down into your palm)
  • Specially weighted for outstanding attack the large body weighs 6 ounces and the small striker weighs 3 ounces this noticeable weight difference helps deliver a solid "knock" sound when you strike them together that's crystal-clear and full of depth
  • Perfect for studio percussion collections studio owners will find it handy to have these African style claves as part of a collection of percussion instruments to always have ready when the moment calls for it during recording
  • Natural finish features a natural finish that lets the light wood grain show through

  • Great Sound!
Style: Classic Color: Hardwood Configuration: Identical, solid
I bought a pair of these claves for my music classroom because the ones I had kept getting taken from me. These were relatively cheap and I didn't expect much from them. They proved me wrong though! I am able to get a loud, clear, and strong sound from them. They are a little on the smaller side, which made me think they were going to be quiet but my orchestra has no problem hearing them over their playing. If they ever fall apart, I'll definitely be buying another pair. ... show more

  • Decent sound and priced right
Style: Classic Color: Select hardwood Configuration: Identical, solid
I’m a classical guitarist, not a percussionist, but often use small percussion instruments in my ensemble for Latin numbers. Lost my ancient rosewood claves (or they walked off) and replaced them with these Meinl redwood claves. Apparently I misread the description—though I was buying another rosewood set—but ended up with redwood. They’re about half the weight of my old rosewood set but softer and less bright when played. My rosewood claves had a rounded bell-like timbre and didn’t have to struck are hard as the Meinl. With that said, these claves are okay: do the job, are priced right, well made and smoothly finished, but I’ll keep my eye out for a quality rosewood set. ... show more

  • Good Tonality and Durability
Style: Classic Color: Select hardwood Configuration: Identical, solid
I was helping at the Middle School and noticed their original Meinl claves were pretty kid-used beat up. Now for close to 20 years of use it was a good testimony to the rosewood (I assume) durability of the product. I purchased replacements and they arrived promptly. Good feel, good sound, stain doesn't come off on your hands. Meinl is a German company so you likely pay a few bucks for import, but I feel its worth it as I've used many of their products and only the shakers feel apart on me. ... show more

  • Redwood-colored, and lacks the tone
Style: Classic Color: Select hardwood Configuration: Identical, solid
'So who's going to know', I can hear the marketing guy say. Well, anyone who cares about the sound of acoustic instruments - especially those old enough to remember the tonal qualities of real redwood: the roundness and warmth beneath the crisp, consistent pop - not to mention the flat, 'powdery' grain and comfortable texture in the hands. I need these so I'm not about to saw them up to tell for sure - the grain and weight indicate they might be stained white oak. Bright sounding to be sure, but lacking the consistent warmth and comfortable feel. I guess the days of grabbing discarded redwood fence slats to build homemade instruments are long gone. I was hoping these might kindle those memories, but it wasn't to be. I regret not getting the natural wood-colored model. I'm sure they have the same tone as these but I wouldn't feel deceived and have to beg off when a percussion friend my age asks 'Hey, are those redwood?'. ... show more

  • Good for the price
Style: Classic Color: Select hardwood Configuration: Identical, solid
Not a perfect set of claves, but for the price not bad at all. i will certainly be able to use them with my elementary choir, but I think they are not quite deep enough to use with a band.

  • Very different and a great choice for any percussionist
Style: African Color: Select hardwood Configuration: Small striker/large body, hollow
I love these claves. They are so different from the traditional salsa claves. These are actually known as rumba claves as well as African claves and they make a lot deeper sound and are less of noxious than the claves that are used in salsa. In addition, you can get to sounds out of these claves. One is a deeper pitch if you hit it towards the middle and the other is a little higher pitch if you hit it on the sides. They are much more versatile than the traditional hardwood claves. If you want to bring some different sounds to your ensemble, try these wonderful items. ... show more
