  • Not a proper Erector set. Mostly plastic parts...
Color: Multicolor
I was fairly disappointed to find out that the vast majority of the parts are made out of plastic. The back of the box even has a "real metal" advertisement on it but the only parts that were metal were the screws, nuts, the 6 or so washers and the small parts that had a crisp angle to attach two parts together, usually consisting of two to three holes and an angle of 45° or 90°. The old Erector motor has been replaced by a much weaker block of this plastic but has lights incorporated. Lights are white and red for the front and back of a vehicle. Red lights blink like hazard lights when the motor is put into reverse. The gears have also undergone this downgrading process by removing all metal and having a triangular shape that fits the triangular metal rods. The old Allen key set screws have been dropped completely. Gears don't fit together as nicely and maybe it's just that I got a smaller set but there seems to be less gear options, whereas the Erector set I owned as a child had a decent selection of gears, including a worm drive gear, and the gears fit together more snug. Instruction book only has three of the twenty five models in it. The rest have to be accessed online, which shouldn't be an issue for most people. To me, it seems they saw how much profit Lego is making by marking up formed plastic and decided that was the more profitable design rather than keeping what set them apart from their closest competitor, which was an all metal piece set with thin plastic pieces to add curved accents or something resembling a windshield. I take solace in the fact that I bought this set instead of the almost ninety dollar set with the crane as the flagship model. ... show more

  • Very Complex for a 6 Year Old; Definitely Hard to Build
Color: Monster Jam
I don't agree with the 5+ age recommendation. I assembled it with a 6 year old LEGO lover who is pretty good at instructions and handling small pieces. This kit was too difficult for him to build alone. I had to help, and as a 40+ year old I struggled with some of the steps. Several of the build steps are compound (multi-stage). There are probably some sharp 5 year olds than can handle this but I think overall I'd say this is 6+ minimum with adult help, and 7+ to do solo. Fun kit overall. The end product had a pretty durable feel, I didn't worry much about it breaking. I did have to go through and tighten all the parts with adult eyes when it was done. I don't know how long it will stay together after some abuse, probably will need some rebuilding. The pull-back doesn't have much strength. ... show more

  • Missing part - Meccano unable to complete kit
Color: Multicolor
Incomplete Christmas Gift. Cool kits and my son loves building them. Difficulty is appropriate and requires an extra hand with a few pieces-which I appreciate. Unfortunately this kit was incomplete and not discovered until a few hours into his build…. Meccano was unable to send out the replacement part. They offered an inexpensive kit as a solution, but my kid really prefers to have the complete kit that Santa brought. Definitely take the time to check parts list before your kid invests time and then can not complete due to missing pieces. 👎 ... show more

  • Don’t buy.
Color: Monster Jam
My five year old was so excited to get this for his birthday! His Dad and I sat down to build it with him only to get halfway through and realize it came missing an important piece. My little man was so upset. 😔

  • Problem with Age Range This is Intended For
Color: Monster Jam
My almost 5-year-old loves all things Grave Digger and he also loves building, whether block kits or other types of building sets. He has two different builder workbenches he has been playing with since he was 1 year old - one of them has a little car to build and take apart with screws and the other has a little truck that has screws and nuts. Neither of them are as complex as this though, where you have to fasten several pieces of the frame together before you bolt it to the vehicle body. Putting this together al by himself is a bit of a stretch for my kid. What we did was do one side with him “helping’ and then he did the corresponding parts on the opposite side by himself. What I like about this set: The pull-back motor is fun - after building, your kid can play with the monster truck and have the satisfaction that they made it work. But… it doesn’t really go very fast as a pull-back truck. Make sure you do it on a concrete, wood, tile or vinyl floor rather than carpet or outside in grass or dirt. - The suspension is a real working one, and that’s really cool to see in a build your own kit at this price point. - It came with everything you need to build (a wrench and an Allen wrench). These aren’t the sturdiest by any means (adults helping will have to make sure that they don’t use full force or the tools will snap). I like that the tools are kid friendly (lightweight and won’t take chunks out of our hardwood when dropped) but you just have to be careful when using them. - The pieces are all plastic rather than sharp metal, so while not as sturdy as metal, they are kid-friendly (same idea as my thoughts on the material selected for the tools). What I don’t like as much: - This isn’t something you take apart then put back together again over and over like my son’s vehicles that came with the builder workbenches. It just isn’t sturdy enough for that, so there is limited playability as far as that goes. He likes building block sets because he can take them apart and put them back together again over and over. This is a disappointment. - I wish that the graphics were just printed on to the plastic rather than having a set of stickers. Yes, adding stickers is part of model building but for a 5-7 year old its hard to line up straight. Also they don’t stick all that well. We have found that by using ethyl (rubbing) alcohol, it helps the stickers adhere better. - This is a really big truck. We like smaller toys for storage reasons. Also in terms of size, its more ideal for a younger child - older kids are not going to sit and push around a car (or even use it as a pull-back car). Overall, though the large size is good for little hands building this model, it’s really huge as a vehicle to play with afterward. My son would have liked this more when he was 2-3 than he would at 5 (or 6-7 which is the suggested age range). For that reason, it’s hard to say what this is marketed for - a build it once model for older kids or a playing vehicle for really little kids. It just doesn’t really meet its mark with either. It's almost better for a 4 year old with the parents mostly building it so there is still some playability with the large push around form factor. ... show more
