I made the huge mistake of going to an Aveda school to let them do my hair. My hair is normally an ashy brown with blonde/bronde balayage. I went in to get my natural color (ashy brown) with light brown money pieces… I ended up with legit red/orange hair. Absolutely horrible. The first two pictures are right after it was done. The next couple are after I used this mask. I used it for 15 mins which was obviously too long because my hair was very dark afterwards… but honestly anything was better than the awful rust/copper color my hair was before. The last couple pictures were after it started to wash out. You could definitely see the highlights coming back through and definitely less red/orange. Here are my cons…. It’s messy and really does stain. Use some sort of gloves. It also reallyyyyyy dried my hair out. And there was always a tinge of green in my highlights. I work at a school which has fluorescent lights and that’s definitely where I noticed it the most… other than that I didn’t notice it too much, and again, it was much better than what they did to my hair. I have been using it mixed with my regular shampoo since then and it’s been fine at keeping the red tones away. Still drying and still a tinge of green but it will work until I’m ready to get my hair done again. ... show more

    • It really does the job.
I always use hair color product but have a ton of natural brassiness pull through regardless of what color treatment i happen to be using. That being said I religiously use blue shampoo. However, someone recommended this product to add a bit to my blue shampoo to give it that extra power of cancelling. So, I bought, I tried and I liked... no, LOVED it. Now, I don't use this right form the tube, as I said I mixed it with my blue. BUT, I did actually try it out just to see what would happen. The recommend to NOT use it on lighter than black/dark brown (level 1-3) hair color. I did and yes, it greened out but only in a couple places where my hair was damaged enough to really hold the green. Mostly, it super toned the brassiness and brought it back to the ashy tones I like. It is pretty liquidy right out of the tube not creamy like some others and a little goes a long way. but will stain your hands but a quick application of a household cleaner or bleach on a cotton ball removes it. ... show more

    • Ineffective, messy waste of time
The only thing this hair mask accomplished was sucking several hours out of my day and dyeing my shower (/me) a weird purplish/blue color. I have dark brown hair with a tint of auburn. I’m over the red and this seemed like an easy, inexpensive way to tone it down. I watched several youtube videos + read through all of the reviews and the general consensus was that putting it on your hair when it’s dry and letting it sit awhile before rinsing was the more effective method. SO…I did that. I have a lot of hair. It’s thick, curly and long (like mid-torso length). So I knew this would be a semi-arduous task. I did NOT know it would take and hour + nearly the entire bottle to coat my head. After it was applied, I let it sit for an hour and then rinsed it out. This stuff is MESSY. It literally looks like an entire family of smurfs were murdered in my tub. It will dye your shower curtain liner, your grout, your towels, your bath mat, your body - literally anything it touches - blue (also: the blue was a surprise to me as the product comes out of the bottle green). It also does not wash out easily. I rinsed and rinsed and rinsed for nearly 30 minutes and the water never ran totally clear. And after all of that…it did nothing. The red is still there and now has a gross purple tint to it. And it’s not like I can do a second application because it took the whole damn bottle to do the first one. So yeah. This was an incredibly annoying, time consuming, messy bust. Save yourself the mess and aggravation. ... show more

    • Good product, but turns hands blue (for a while)
I have tried this product twice. The first time I freaked out a bit because my hands turned blue with the dye, so I washed the product right away to avoid damaging my hair. The second time I left the product the amount of time recommended, and I did see a difference in the color of my hair. I got highlights, but these are in the chestnut color palette, so my hairstylist recommended I use this mask to ensure the color would not get too light. It works! But beware that the hands will get stained with a light blue color… it goes away in a couple of days, though. ... show more

    • Follow the directions!
It really really works. So use a test strip, wear your gloves, and follow the directions. I have natural never dyed dark brown hair with reddish undertones. I did not follow the directions:/ I thought it wouldn’t work much so I applied it to my dry hair, and left it on a half hour. Now my hair is basically ash brown/black. So it definitely covers the red, it looks fine, I’m sure it will fade. Up close I can see my grey hairs are a little blue which I didn’t think about. I plan to continue using, but more sparingly and less time. ... show more

I bought this hoping to neutralize the red tones that came with dying my hair brown. I have naturally brown hair with red undertones, but have been getting it professionally dyed for years blonde. I went back brunette and it was too red at my roots/top of scalp. The instructions say to stay away from your roots, but I just gently put it across and the staining wasn’t an issue. I wore gloves both times. The first time I left it on for 5 minutes and it didn’t change anything, the second time I left it on for 8 and it worked! Yay. So happy!
