  • Tighten Everything LAST, Prepare To Spend Time Learning!
The media could not be loaded. Right off the bat, I'm really happy with how well-packed this was. I can't tell you how many things I've ordered that have parts just jingling around inside, but this was packed REALLY well and every part was really securely protected. Assembly was (more or less) a breeze - you legitimately only need the tools they included, all-in-all assembly took me about 90 minutes from cutting the box open to starting my first test cut, but that's partially because I tightened things too soon and had trouble lining stuff up until I loosened it again (also I forgot to use washers, so I went back and put them in just for posterity's sake), and also I kept stopping to take pictures and video clips because I was so impressed haha. If you DIDN'T make my silly mistakes (and also didn't keep stopping for pictures), it'd take literally half the time or less. The LONGEST part of the process for me was wiring. The company labeled every single wire and it's super easy to get them all plugged in, just, there's a bunch. You have to check the diagram in the manual and plug each cable into the right slot, double-triple check that ALL the cables are plugged in (both ends) otherwise it literally just won't work right (and REALLY make sure it's all right, because you don't want to have a failing safety mechanism or be sending your X-axis coordinates to the Z-axis). That part took me probably 15 minutes by itself just because I kept double-checking it over and over. Then you plug the machine into your computer, plug the USB stick in as well, install the machine's drivers onto your computer, and copy the controller program over onto your computer (I put mine in a folder on the desktop so it's easy to find). You don't "install" the program, you just launch it, so it can easily be deleted at any time - on purpose OR by accident. They also give you like four test projects to carve, I like the MAZE one because you can adjust the depth for the cut by only changing one number (if you know anything about CNC carving this way, you're aware of how many number sets there can be and how tedious it would be for a noob like me to change every instance of the Z-axis to a different value manually). All that said, BE AWARE - I got into CNC because I thought it looked interesting, and it IS, but it's NOT straightforward. If you want to cut a pre-made file from the internet, the easiest possible thing to cut, you'll still need to do a calibration every time you cut a new project and you'll still have to understand the basics of adjusting aspects of your cut using the editor (which may or may not involve a little math). It's not as simple as just drag-and-drop usage, it's not like a Cricut or something, it's still pretty rough technology compared to the easy-to-use stuff dummies like me usually prefer. But it IS interesting and it's very satisfying to figure it out and make it do what you want it to. I'm sure at some point in the future there will be an option where you can just put a black-and-white picture or vector in and tell it "plot your cutting path to carve this at a 1mm depth", but for now it's up to YOU to plot that, with MATH! In any case, I got this so that I could carve BIG projects (well, big FLAT projects) without taking up a lot of space in my little house, and the most important things to me were PRICE, SIZE, and the ability to swap out the cutter for a LASER - and this machine absolutely fills all three of those needs. It's plenty big in terms of the cutting area but the footprint is still small - it's like the size of one of those paper cutters you probably used in elementary school, it weighs about that much too, you totally can just pick it up and move it if you want. It's super inexpensive compared other units, it's actually cheaper than most of the other CNCs I've found that were the same size, so I'm satisfied that I could start learning CNC without breaking the bank. And it IS laser compatible - I haven't ordered mine yet, but I'm doing that ASAP for sure, I really want to make a big woodblock laser print for my girlfriend's office, she's a big fan of Hobo font so I'll probably do a sign that's her name spelled in that font or something, with plant-looking decoration around the outside of it. I think it's gonna be fun, I'm excited about this! ... show more

  • A few things
This looks like a great beginner tool to this hobby. I've carved a test carve and can see myself doing a lot with this. But why include just 1/8 adapter when hardware stores carry 1/2 and 1/4. That's a bummer. Also says 10 bits come with it and no details. Turns out they're all the same and are very fine 30 degree bits. I figured there would be an assortment. Assembly was decent. Instructions had different color for some wiring but there labeled. Very good instructions. Missing a couple washers but I had some. You'll need all 4 clamps. 2 worked most the carve then one loosened and messed it up. All in all good tool. Quite upset it only allows 1/8 bits and comes with 10 of these 30 degree cheap bits when they sell better ones. ... show more

  • Great machine at a low price point!
Took some time this evening to setup the masuter. First impressions are that this is a solid machine, similar to the other machines they produce. Easy to setup and I was carving in no time. Initial review: I planned for a while to get it all set up. Only took me about 30 minutes to set it up so I ended up giving the software a go and I still need to learn the bits and how to use them for carving. This week I will print a dust shoe for it and research bits online to have better knowledge of which to use/when. Masuter Pros: - super easy setup (I was done in under 30 minutes) - solid build quality - quality machine at a great price point - No play in the spindle (others have had that issue) - offline controller option which I will use later - did my first carve within 30 minutes of setup Masuter Cons (and I am being nit picky): - could use a good reference guide for bits ( I can search and find, but that would be a good add to the usb stick or page in the guide) - better way to attach the material to the spoilboard (quicker attach/detach) ... show more

  • Beginners avoid
It was extremely easy to assemble but as far as installation of the software it has been a hassle. The USB drive included only had a Microsoft version. Had to write their support for the Mac version. And I've had this about two weeks and still have yet to get the software to work properly. Even after multiple emails to their support. I just have a paperweight and confusing software on my Macbook. I'd hold out for a different brand or it might go easier if you have a Microsoft laptop or computer. I refuse to quit and will try as much as I can to get it going though. I did pay for it, it does respond to the buttons on it, but the software installation has been a nightmare. ... show more

  • Worked ok but not worth the price.
This uses v-rollers and belts, wood chips and dust get on and in the rollers and belts and causes bumps. The control board is at the back of the machine where all the dust collects. The z axis and spindle, there is over 0.050 play because of plastic parts and very little force to get 0.015 movement. No way to align the 2 Y axis. Easy to assemble and get going making something. Recommend soft woods and plastic. Not sturdy enough for hard wood and aluminum. 15x15 work area is great. ... show more

  • Worth buying
Overall, the machine is very cool. I tried the Snap Maker one and it was ok, but the capabilities of this machine is much better. The workspace is larger. Also, the software used to run the program which is Candle is easy to learn, and the instructions can be understood and applied easily for me as a beginner. In addition, the customer service at FoxAlien is phenomenal, They have great staff responding to customer inquiries and solving issues that some may encounter. I personally encountered a problem with the DC power supply for the 300W spindle, I reported the issue via FoxAlien website, and they do a replacement of the part and it was sent to me for free of charge. I extremely recommend it to everyone interested in CNC or laser engraving machines as the money value is very reasonable compared to it's counterparts. ... show more
