Description

“Margo’s Got Money Troubles is the feel-good novel we need right now.” —The Washington Post “[An] enormously entertaining and lovable book.” —Nick Hornby, New York Times Book Review A bold, laugh-out-loud funny, and heartwarming story about one young woman’s attempt to navigate adulthood, new motherhood, and her meager bank account in our increasingly online world—from the PEN/Faulkner finalist and critically acclaimed author of The Knockout Queen. As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger. Now, at twenty, Margo is alone with an infant, unemployed, and on the verge of eviction. She needs a cash infusion—fast. When her estranged father, Jinx, shows up on her doorstep and asks to move in with her, she agrees in exchange for help with childcare. Then Margo begins to form a plan: she’ll start an OnlyFans as an experiment, and soon finds herself adapting some of Jinx’s advice from the world of wrestling. Like how to craft a compelling character and make your audience fall in love with you. Before she knows it, she’s turned it into a runaway success. Could this be the answer to all of Margo’s problems, or does internet fame come with too high a price?Blisteringly funny and filled with sharp insight, Margo’s Got Money Troubles is a tender tale starring an endearing young heroine who’s struggling to wrest money and power from a world that has little interest in giving it to her. It’s a playful and honest examination of the art of storytelling and controlling your own narrative, and an empowering portrait of coming into your own, both online and off. “A wholly original novel. . . . Thorpe is both poetic and profound in the way she brings her remarkable story to an end.” —The Associated Press Read more

  • It's not a silly fluff piece!
What an amusing, insightful and sometimes surprising book. The topic -- young unwed mother struggles with balancing baby and life while dodging the challenges of her rather bizarre "family" -- sounds very soap-opera-ish, but it's not. The writing is crisp and honest, and I can see why the author has won seriously prestigious awards. ... show more

  • Fun entertainment
This book was so much fun! Silly, cute, funny, entertaining but at the same time kinda realistic book. The story is so common, and yet Thorpe wrote it in such a way that it reads like a made-up one. I smiled, I frowned, I ghasped, and I laughed. No twists in this book, and I still couldn't put it down as I wanted to know what the next chapter is gonna bring, knowing damn well how it is going to end :-) ... show more

  • umm…
This was such an odd book. I went in blind, so I had no idea where the story was going. Parts of it were great, parts were strange. Overall, it was well written. Bit I’m also not sure how I feel about the ideal of “legal sex work” as a way to support yourself long term. I could see the necessity in Margo’s case, but really struggled with the moral of the story being “Yes! Raise your child in and around the porn industry and have friends that do a podcast about shrooms!” I conceived a child with my older boss at age 19, raised her on my own until I met my now husband. And at age 36, I have a drug addicted mother, so these concepts aren’t new to me by any means. I guess I just found the whole thing depressing and not the slightest bit funny or positive or encouraging. ... show more

  • Laugh out loud funny while tackling tough topics
Book Dynamics✨ 1 POV First and Third person narration (trust the process) Laugh out loud funny Coming of age This is basically if you take Adelaide and mix it with an Emily Austin novel and add OnlyFans and then sprinkle on some wrestling lore. So so so good. Laugh out loud funny while tackling tough topics like abuse of power, women deciding what they do with their own bodies and how that is viewed, (single) mothers being expected to do it all, the system making everything so damn difficult. Chefs kiss all around. Stick with it with the first and third person narration switches, it lends to the story and comes together so perfectly. Overall: a fave of the year, I’m calling it now Favorite Character: Margo ... show more

  • a special treat
If someone told me I’d fall in love with these characters - wrestlers, online sex workers, teen moms and professors taking advantage of their students - I wouldn’t have believed it. But Rufi Thorpe has woven a beautiful tapestry that shows life is what you make of it, that chances are worth taking and that your job doesn’t define who you are. Enjoy this eccentric, lovely story. ... show more

  • Smart Book!
Cascading storytelling, compelling characters and a plot as contagious as the latest viral video. Thorpe takes an insightful look at youthful and older indiscretions, gig work, sex work and the human need for connection. I didn't want to put this book down and look forward to its memories dropping into the recesses of my mind so I can pick it up again with fresh eyes. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Good Read
Not as witty as it tried to be and the romance just didn't work for me however still a worthwhile read.

  • It was okay
I read this for my book club. It will make for good book club discussion (so many things we can dissect), but I was expecting it to be funnier based on the reviews. It was a quick and easy read, but didn't leave me thinking about the characters or wanting to know what happens next.
