  • Stained countertops, used on grey roots
Color: Pink Warrior Size: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
(See updates below) I have always heard great things about Manic Panic so decided to switch after years of using henna. I figured I would use a paintbrush and dye my grey roots, while leaving the length orange and brown. The bottle came well sealed but the label was covering the instructions. I used a brand new paintbrush and just dipped it in, applying liberally. No stranger to messy dye, I used gloves and kept my work area tidy. Even so, when I rinsed the paintbrushes off, any tiny bit of contact with the countertop resulted in permanent stains, even when I tried to wipe it away immediately. Tried borax and super washing soda combined with lemon juice. No luck. Tried scrubbing bubbles. Nada. Tried hydrogen peroxide. Also no. Manufacturer's web site has some recommendations such as Magic Eraser and/or acetone but we have neither of those. Before you start, test your workspace in a non-visible area and make sure you have a good cleaning solution for it before you start. Even so, I was very tidy. I even managed to keep the dye off of my scalp in most spots, except towards my temples where the hair is very fine. I have very thick hair and figured I'd test a top layer before bothering with lower layers. But I also did apply it fairly thickly on top. It looked great during application. I let it sit for four hours (after running strand tests and finding the white hair to be fairly stubborn if less than 4 hours). When I rinsed the initial dye out, this is what it looked like right away, while still wet. Basically, pink scalp with still white strands. To be fair, I didn't bleach it. I have knee-length hair and am not about to risk that kind of damage. Henna is far more effective and doesn't need to be bleached. You can see some orange henna strands toward the back from months ago. I usually use a tiny amount of acid with henna, such as vinegar or lemon juice, to help the dye absorb. I may try a mix of that on a strand test to see if there's a ratio that wouldn't cause harm. I don't want to give up on Manic Panic but it's ineffective so far and damaging to bathroom surfaces. That said, it smells neutral, which is a lot better than henna. It's also nice that it's premixed and not as much of a royal mess, though at least henna doesn't permanently stain countertops/tubs. I had been hoping to go for buying purple, red, and blue to give a subtle flame-like hue on my grey roots, over the course of a couple of years. But this just isn't really working out so far. I'll probably keep trying and will update the review if I have any success. Update (about a week later): I did another round and am going to increase the star rating. This time, the dye absorbed really well! I did two things differently: I shampooed my roots a day ahead of time and I used about twice as much dye. I also used petroleum jelly on my scalp line, as others recommended. That helped for not having a pink face but I found it didn't really work on the top of my head, as it just meant that the roots became immune to dye, lol. Basically, for my hair, if it's too conditioned/coated, the dye won't absorb. If it's dry, it bonds better. I have almost ankle-length hair, so I usually keep my hair pretty oiled and conditioned to avoid snarls. I do not bleach, ever, as that runs too much risk of breakage/harm. I do love how conditioned my hair feels after using this dye. I've upgraded from 2 stars to 5 stars. I'd probably knock it a half star for the way it dyes the countertop and tub, if I could take away half a star. I'm not sure how well it will hold up with time and may update the review later. I will note that the dye didn't stain the tub if it was diluted, such as during showering, but I also only used this on my roots (I use henna on the length) so volume may be part of why it went okay. My fingernails got badly stained - even though I used gloves, this stuff is strangely itchy for me so scratching it the first day led to messy pink fingernails. Not a big deal though. I ended up buying another color too, as the second round went so much better than the first round. ... show more

  • Such a great color - and doesn’t harm my hair!
Color: After Midnight Size: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
It actually conditions my hair, as they say! I don’t bleach my hair underneath this color, I actually put it on over a dark chocolate cherry dye I use on my whole head. I put this midnight blue dye on the bottom third of my hair on top of the chocolate cherry dye. This gives it a really nice, dark blue - almost dark purple color - and the parts of my hair that are highlighted blond streaks get a nice teal color - it’s a pretty mix that I get lots of comments on! It lasts pretty well, but I need to wash my hair with cold water to keep the color - I also re-dye with this every 2-3 weeks, but it’s so easy! I just color the bottom 1/3 of my hair with this midnight blue dye……I put my hair in two ponytails, put the dye on, then put the ponytails in ziplox bags, tightened with hair bands, and sleep with it on - then rinse it in the morning. I love this hair dye! Soooo worth the money! ... show more

  • Love it and don't. Here is my reason
Color: Cotton Candy Pink Size: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
So in the pictures that I've added the full head of purple hair was my daughter. We didn't want to do any permanent or actually dying of her hair. So we thought this was a good compromise. It took the whole container just one container but the whole container on her hair and it did work. Inside it was darker and a little bit harder to tell it was purple. But depending upon the light it was you could see it when we went outside her hair was super duper purple. It was exactly what she wanted and she was super happy. So in that point for me for my kid I love it I would give it a five stars because it washes out after a couple washes. However don't let them take a bath because then it'll stay in your bathtub, so they have to shower. And her hair was a light brown or a dark blonde. And it worked pretty good on her. And she got the purple that she wanted for her birthday. And it was fun for her to try that. So if you're looking for doing it on a blonde, light blonde, dark blonde, light brown hair and you really want it to be just temporary this is really great. Her hair has now faded you can't tell it's purple anymore but it is like a nice darker hue. We tried to go with a pink and the pink didn't work not at all. It was very disappointed in that We tried pink on her blonde hair didn't work we tried pink on our even blonder child and it didn't work I even bleached my hair and I haven't done anything to my hair and over 10 years. Just so I could get the pink and the pink didn't work. So I didn't care for the pink but this purple lavender color definitely worked and we have gotten it a couple times now because we like it so much. Again this has been great for the kids because it washes out and it's not permanent and it's super easy and it's super good conditioner. Now for my own hair when I put the purple in it just darkened my hair and that was pretty much it I didn't have color but I'm more of a dark brown. So I wasn't surprised that it didn't work too well. After the little bit did wash out I did end up bleaching my hair for like a peekaboo look and put the purple in and I absolutely loved it. The purple underneath is it in my hair. And you could see that it's like a bright purple in that lighting. But then the picture where my hair is wet that is more accurate for the purple that was more of a natural light. So really depending upon the light it can change the color. And I loved it so much I was just really sad that after two washes for me it was pretty much already all the way gone. But it was a good step in finding that I do like purple and I'll just get a more permanent type of purple. So for me this is mixed reviews for personally since I wanted it to last a little bit longer and I had liked the idea of being able to change the color more often this was a letdown. Because it did wash out way too fast for me. But then for the kids I would say it's a five star because it was absolutely perfect and it does wash out and it wasn't permanent and it actually lasted longer for my daughter. ... show more

  • These Dyes Last If You Apply Correctly
Color: Rockabilly Blue Size: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
So far I have used the Rockabilly Blue, Enchanted Forest, and Violet Night on my virgin light brown/gray hair without bleaching first. I first washed my hair with Prell to get all the residue out and rough up the hair shaft a little so it would take the dye well. I did not use conditioner. Then I applied the dye and left it on for 8 hours, under a plastic cap. I have fairly thin hair, so I was able to use just 1/2 a container. I rinsed the dye out thoroughly with warm water but did not immediately shampoo it out. I waited until it was totally dry before going to bed. This made sure the dye did not bleed onto the pillow. I didn't shampoo it until about 3 days later, and I always used a shampoo without sulfates. In each case, the dye faded somewhat but at 4 weeks it still looked pretty good. I then dyed it again. I am very happy with the results. I hope that if you try it this way, you will be happy with the results, too. ... show more
