  • Great off-camera mobile lighting option for events, product photography, portraits
Size: 8 LED
Versatile and functional, compact and efficient, this well-designed photography light from Manfrotto makes it easy to add creative dynamic highlights, key lights, hair lights, or contrasting portrait lighting in a snap. Lumie is particularly useful on the go, for events, when time is short for setting up remote flashes, and when you shoot a wide variety of subjects -- from individuals or couples, to food to products, table displays, etc. While it's not designed to be a complete substitute for a full flash in terms of field of light, at about 50 degrees wide (compare to a 35mm FX lens field of view at 54°, 24mm at 73°, 14mm at 104°), when placed off-camera, at an angle, this field is useful in that it will wash the subject without unduly lighting the background, achieving a subject-focused composition with "natural vignetting". I find also find Lumie to be helpful for critical focus in dim lighting, allowing you to assess and adjust for aperture and depth of field trade-offs without dropping the shutter or cranking up ISO too much, and for color clarity and dynamic range. You can also utilize the pop-up flash on the DSLR (Nikon D750 or 810), cut back by 1-2 stops, to fill in the front of the subject and still achieve dynamic highlights from the Lumie. Catch-lights are also well formed light pins in the eyes, very nice. I like the light quality right out of the box, it is sharp without being hot. The four-step intensity of light is useful, and the tripod-mounted light is easily repositioned, making it simple to dial in just the right touch. Drape it with a cloth napkin to soften or alter the quality of light, or use the included filters. The Lumie itself has a flat base with a recessed shoe mount slot, and can sit directly on a table. To use it on camera or tripod, slide the included micro-ballhead into the slot. The micro-head has a camera cold-shoe mount, providing a secure fit, albeit without a lock. Or just screw it onto any 1/4" screw, like the Pixie ball head, and you're ready to go. Design and form factor are both well executed, giving the ensemble a premium look & feel, with good ergonomics. Battery life on the USB-rechargeable LiON is fine. I get a couple hours from it using low and high intensity settings, enough to cover a 1/2 day event of varied use. I don't do a lot of product reviews, but this Manfrotto Lumie with the Pixie tripod has already proven its worth on a couple of client event shoots, and is now part of my kit. At about $125 combined, it seems pricey "for just a tiny light on a stand". But it will save you time and add versatility to your creative capabilities. I see this as a viable option, in enough circumstances, to create off-camera-flash results in half the time and space, and without deploying flash triggers and associated complications. ... show more

  • Powerful, quality product.
Size: 8 LED
This is my second lumimuse 8. I liked the first one so much I couldn't resist this purchase when the price on Amazon dropped a full 50% below the cost of the initial unit. This is a very nice, compact little light, with good output for its size. I use it primarily for close up work. I find it to be particularly useful shooting indoors when weather conditions are prohibitive. It works well outside too when your subject is in deep shadow, or strongly back lit by the sun and you need fill on the front to reduce contrast. It also works well as a back light if you wish to create an edge lighting effect, or if you need a little extra illumination behind your subject. This light is designed to be mounted on the camera's hot shoe with a supplied adapter (which I found to be quite tight initially on both units). Since I am not a huge fan of flat, frontal lighting, I tend to use the adapter sparingly. This little guy is so light, hand holding is a breeze. Which means you can easily move the light around your subject to get the modeling effect you desire. This light works well with the manfrotto pixi, mini tripod when you need an extra hand. I like this unit VERY much. The only CONS I've found are: #1. The lack of a remaining power indicator, and #2. The tiny cover over the recharging port is not attached to the unit and is VERY easy to lose. ... show more

  • Let there be light!
Size: 8 LED
The media could not be loaded. Just received the unit. I will do a review soon & post some photos. For the time being, here's a quick look at the received unit in a friendly easy to open plastic packaging : 1. Manfrotto Lumie Muse LED Light. 2. Manfrotto Lumie Ball Head Mount. 3. Three (3) interchangeable filters & a protective case. 4. USB cable for charging. 5. A mini instruction booklet. It's good to know the unit comes with the ball head mount already so you don't have to buy the "Manfrotto MLBALL Lumie Series Ball Head Mount" which is sold separately at $11.99, unless you need a replacement or as a spare. First impression: The unit appears to be made of good quality. Holding in your hand with a weight of 0.39 lbs does feel solid & not some LED cheap light-weight plastic material. Tested the 4 step dimming. All in good working condition. Unable to test how bright it is as I'm at work now. Other useful information: -Lux output 550 -5600°K daylight rated -Beam angle 50° -Run time 60 min to 300 min **Updated 30th December 2015** I posted a simple test video of the LED. This will give you an ideal of the light performance. Room type: Dedicated home theater (bat cave). Room size: 25 sqm (269 sqft). Distance camera to the middle seat (front row)t: 2.5m (8 feet). Distance camera to the back wall: 4.5m (15 feet). Ceiling height: 3m (10 feet) Camera used: Canon PowerShot G16 ... show more

  • You likely won't use the BT; save money and get the regular version
Size: 8 LED with Bluetooth
I thought I'd use the BT more than I actually do with this light. I do only own one of them (as I use it with Moment Macro lens for on the go macro photography); if I had more lights I may potentially use the BT more than I do now. Another thing to note; this BT version comes with the less-than-great fixed cold shoe mount, rather than the amazing ball head mount that comes with the regular version (non-BT). You'll have to buy it separately, as the included fixed cold shoe mount falls out constantly. Output of light is as advertised (compared to other 500 lux light), and adjusting output is very easy. No color shift / tint at ALL. Love these little lights and highly recommend them. ... show more
