  • Low vibration, good ergonomic, uses standard planer blades
Style: Planer, Tool Only
I have a Bosch corded hand planer which is very durable and accurate, and about twenty years old, so this Makita cordless had a high bar to meet in the performance department. I find that the tool performs very well on a variety of materials from soft redwood to hard birch/maple, maintaining consistent motor speed and cutting power IF you take your time and IF you use sharp blades (think fresh razor blade love when shaving, boys and girls). Good maneuverability for planing down bowed and twisted framing before installing drywall in renovations where the cordless feature makes work less of a tangle. I recommend a 4Ahr battery to keep the performance up and keep the weight reasonable: realize that this tool is not brushless and is belt drive, so the compact LXT batteries you prefer for your impact driver and jig saw will not have much run time (and may give slower and less powerful motor speed which means poor finish quality) If you’re a Blue Tool LXT platform tool user, this planer won’t disappoint…be sure to by good quality blades and change them out frequently for best results ... show more

  • Great little machine. Did a great job finishing a difficult task
Style: Planer, Tool Only
I love this machine. It quickly took care of leveling my big hardwood work bench including end grain without any effort. I had been hand planning it for several hours prior and this finished the job in a short amount of time. I had a couple of slats that had squirrelly grain in it and was having a hard time with my jack plane going over this area. It would chip out, but the Makita planer taking shallow cuts and going slow would just smooth this up, getting rid of the chip outs. That made a big difference in completing the leveling of the top. It is lightweight and easy to use, both on flat surfaces as well as working on the sides. One draw back is that the chip exhaust is only on one side and if you have to go a specific direction, such as it pointing up plaining on the side, it goes in your face. You could get a collector bag as an accessory, but it would have been nice if Makita had an elbow that would fit the exhaust port so you could direct where the dust/chips go. I have since purchased a smaller dust hose that will fit it and that should help control the chips going everywhere. ... show more

  • A nice tool, but be forewarned
Style: Planer, Tool Only
I've had good luck with this planer, or at least I did until I needed to use the guide rail, or "parallel stop," a part that, as far as I can see, is included with every other cordless planer you can buy on Amazon, just not this Makita. I needed the guide rail the other day. After rooting around in the box and not finding it, I saw that other people who bought this planer didn't get one, either. Why so stingy? Anyway, bottom line: if you're doing freestyle planing, then this tool works fine, but if someday you need to plane in a straight line, as I do right now, you'll need to buy the guide separately. On Amazon, it's $26 and takes a week to ship. Update: I bought the guide rail and have now used it several times. It works fine, and I have to say, it's sturdier than the ones I've seen on similar planers, so I halfway understand why Makita charges extra for it. ... show more

  • Fantastic unit.
Style: Planer, Tool Only
This planer has made it possible for me to take what would be crooked and unusable pieces of wood, and actually make something out of them. Yes, I’m sure other planers do the same, but this one is super smooth, low noise and very efficient. Very happy with it so far. My only complaint would be the ergonomics. The design could be better as it relates to the safety, but that’s true of most of the Makita cordless tools and this is similar to all of those. So if you’re used to Makita power tools, that won’t be an a big deal for you. Overall, I’m very happy with this planer. ... show more

  • Love this planer!
Style: Planer, Tool Only
I bought planer just before I had 11 doors to install in an office building. I have the electric Makita and that is a fine tool also, but who wants to deal with cords anymore. I took the accessory fence off the old Makita and it fits perfectly on the new cordless planer. The planer was perfect, leaves a nice finish and easy to handle. The depth setting adjustment worked great, and the bases were coplanar to each other. Battery power isn't an issue for me, having a bunch of Makita batteries I never ran out. It doesn't have a bag, but you really don't want a bag on a planer...it creates too much waste. And I do not want a vacuum hose on it either, when your putting 1.5 degree on a door edge, the last thing you want is extra weight on one side. Now if they come out with a cordless trim router, that would complete the door install job! ... show more
