The double album features 13 live versions of songs from Isbell's last three critically acclaimed, award-winning studio albums - Southeastern (2013), Something More Than Free (2015) and The Nashville Sound (2017) - including the Grammy winning tracks "24 Frames" and "If We Were Vampires" plus fellow standouts "Cover Me Up," "Something More Than Free" and "Elephant," fully documenting Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's emergence as one of the finest live bands on the road today.

  • Fabulous Live Album
I don't know why some dislike this album. It is fabulous.....know all the tracks since I have all of Isbel's albums, but hearing him perform live is always a treat, and live albums are the best! The sound quality is excellent and knowing it was done at the Ryman makes it special since the Ryman is such a great place to perform and attend a performance. Love the album. ... show more

  • Alt America with delicacy and Raunch
If you liked The Drive-Truckers with Jason Isbell, buy this! If you liked Jason Isbell solo, buy this. I have seen complaints about the sound quality and the apparently disjointed editing of the songs. Well, I experienced none of that on my vinyl copy. And not living in The States, this is about as close as I am going to get to hearing what the man and his band can do. He does also remind us that he is a slide guitarist of note on this outing! ... show more

  • Music good, sun bad for music
This is a great rekkid but Amazon should teach their drivers not to leave deliveries in the boiling California sun. It's bad for everything.

  • What were they thinking releasing this?
I'm a huge Isbell fan and have seen him several times, purchased all the albums, etc. I write this out of love. Go listen to a few tracks on Youtube before you buy this, and if the quality is acceptable to you then buy it. This is the worst recording of a live show that I've ever heard released. I've heard bootlegs recorded on Tascams that sound better than this. Right out of the gate on the first track, it's almost as if they didn't mic up the snare drum or had it muted on the recording, and all you can hear is the echo from the snare, which is off tempo to the rest of the band. Ten seconds in and I knew something was wrong. It's not until track 3 or 4 where they get that fixed. There are some good moments but the recording ruins it for me, and the show comes off as low energy and flat. That's the opposite of how I've felt when I'm actually at one of The 400 Unit's shows, so this album does a bad job of showcasing Isbell and band's live abilities. Buy "Live from Alabama" and let it enrich your life for years to come, but stay away from Live at the Ryman. The Ryman is a sacred place, and this album is borderline disrespectful. I hope they put out another live album, but do it right next time. ... show more

  • Again
every song remains the same key. Hence, all sound the same. The live versions are played louder and repeated. disappointed

  • Very disappointed!
I’ve loved all of the albums Jason has put out (including the DBT work)...until this one. I purchased the CD, so I dismissed the comments about the album press and poor quality. However, even on the CD, the recording doesn’t sound very good, but that’s not really my issue with album - although it is the first indication that little effort was put into this. My real issue is that with a live album I want to come as close as possible to experiencing the show as if I was there. And this doesn’t even come close....it is simply a collection of live songs, not a live performance. There’s no real flow or commentary between the songs, the first song simply starts and the last song simply ends. After the last song Jason says “thank you, that’s another song off our new record” and the recording ends! The album is only 58 minutes which is an obvious indicator that it’s a chopped up set of songs from a 90 minute live performance. For an artist that talks so much about the quality of music, I really don’t get why Jason would have put something like this out. Very disappointed! ... show more

  • Bad reviews?
I see a bunch of bad reviews about this album,cd, Bad sound , etc. Am I listening to a different cd? I'm glad I paid no attention to those reviews. I think the sound quality is great. I'm a fan of Isbel. And I want everything he does. Drive By Truckers live stuff is always great and Jason Isbel live stuff is every bit as good. Buy this CD....... . ... show more

  • Best songwriter of this generation
The sound mixing on this isn't what I'd like to hear. The drums on Cover Me Up in the live arrangement were spectacular, but you can't hear them on this recording. I love every song, and the mix won't stop me from loving this album. Jason Isbell is the best songwriter of his generation. His writing and playing chops are on full display here. ... show more
