Packaging and Accessories: The actual driver unit design is unique and well-built. Absolutely love the lego look and its super low profile being completely black in color. The buds are cold to the touch and smoothly finished as well. No complaints here. The stock cable, however, that comes with the earbuds is thick and doesn't tangle and is coated in plastic making it pretty durable BUT I would highly recommend that you replace the cable though because the part that connects with the earbuds doesn't seem very reassuring and may get loose over time. A lot of people have also criticized the case for being too slippery and I have to agree. Its also pretty compact considering it barely has enough space for the buds and the relatively thick wire so you have to fold the buds super tightly every time you put them back (you can't just quickly throw them into the case) The one benefit of this case compared to that of the P1 and others is that its super compact size makes it easy to throw in your pocket and the case itself is made of a sturdy alloy metal so its very unlikely to break. Its also super low profile with a dull green color and is lined inside with some smooth felt material. The Sound: The sound is reason why these IEMs are worth every penny and moreover deserve 5 stars. First of all the electrostatic driver is a thing of beauty. It's ultra efficient unlike the planar magnetic driver in the P1. This means you can easily power this headphone with your laptop, smartphone whatever you want to use (half volume on a laptop and only 60-70 percent volume on a phone to get them more loud enough). I would highly recommend using a dac because the sound on my smartphone was a little less detailed, especially the bass but its not required. As far as describing the sound in one word, the best word to describe them is: INTENSE. These aren't your run of the mill IEMs. These are trying in every way possible to shove as much treble detail as worldly possible into your head in the tightest and quickest way. You will hear every little minute detail in the song especially cymbals, snare drums, little chimes, tings etc. etc. and its absolutely glorious. Your going to go into these IEMs expecting an insane but familiar listening experience of your favorite music and come out learning so many new things you didn't notice about the songs you've heard time and time again. I want to EMPHASIZE that I am treble sensitive but these haven't rubbed me the wrong way yet and I've put several hours on them already. BUT, if you predominantly listen to heavy metal or rock OR rap, the detail on these might be fatiguing as it was for me slightly. I wouldn't say that those genres are a weakness for these IEMs but definitely not a strong suit. You can still listen to those genres but the setup is not ideal. This level of detail is perfect for those who like Jazz, themes from movies/anime, classical music, hip hop. Anything that has a collection of real instruments, vocals, and is well-recorded will shine in these IEMs. I was amazed listening to Hedwig's theme from Harry Potter and Welcome to Jurassic Park. Just incredible for an IEM. Along with exceptional treble detail you get immaculate separation and imaging. Each element of the song is easily discernible and clean sounding (no siblance whatsoever) and you can tell exactly where it's coming from to the T. The electrostatic driver is effortless in its delivery of treble detail and has lightning quick frequency response. This is a V-shaped IEM, so the mids are recessed. About what you would expect from any other IEM in this price point. The vocals are also slightly colored. By no means neutral sounding. Ariana sounds half an octave higher is the best way I can describe her voice as is with all other vocals. Its something you need to get used to but the same clarity in the treble carries over to the mids as well. The other highlight of this IEM is the BASS. My god is this some of the nicest bass i've heard on an IEM. Unlike most other IEMs that muddy up the sound with tons of mid-bass and very little sub-bass, these are extremely deep, rich, and go super low hz. For example interstellar soundtracks and the song The Longest Walk by Anne Dudley, the bass is spectacular. Some of the best renditions of the songs that I've ever heard. Verdict: Don't be fooled. A lot of IEM manufacturers like to throw in 4, 5, maybe even 6 balanced armatures with a dynamic driver and market their IEMs saying look we got 10 drivers!!!! Don't get me wrong they sound pretty good for what they are but none of the ones that I've listened to come close to what this electrostatic driver is able to do. This driver is able to produce more detail, clarity, and quality than what several balanced armatures can do and the dynamic driver on the Tapes does a better job with the bass hands down over almost all IEM in this price range and I would say up to the 250-300 dollar range. While the P1s have the Tapes beat on the mids, the Tapes beat two times over in the treble and bass. If your huge into rock and rap, I would just go with a KZ or Tin T series (preferrably a 2) but otherwise buy these immediately! Worth your time and money and I'm sure as hype around these grow they will have hundreds of reviews and be more expensive as well. ... show more

    • Hints of an incredible IEM, but falls short with some critical flaws

I'm going to end this review on sound, as its where almost all of my complaints are. BUILD QUALITY -- Build is quite solid, being an all metal housing and having quite strong MMCX connectors that won't just come loose, build is above what I had expected at this price point CABLE & ACCESSORIES -- Surprisingly, the Tape came with a 2.5mm TRRS cable! I didn't have any devices to test this though, so I'm glad that it also came with a 2.5mm TRRS to 3.5mm TRS adapter. The actual quality of the cable was perfectly fine, not causing any "microphonics" (can we just say "it didn't make a sound when it brushed against something"?) not being incredible, not that I would expect anything better at this price point. Included tips are of pretty bad quality though, but most people will be using their own tips anyway. SOUND -- This is where these IEMs disappointed me the most, not because they were all-around terrible, but that they were so close to perfect, but the few flaws they do have are so apparent that it ruined them for me, but maybe not for you. The bass is surprisingly competent at this level. It thumps, not rumbles, with sub-bass extension being respectable and not bloated, able to show some texture and character in the music. That said, it rolls off a little faster going up through mid-bass and into the mids than I would like, and it can take away the impact from bass guitars a bit. Being V-shaped like others have said, the mids are kinda recessed and... Not great, but usually acceptable, at least until you get a male vocalist or some electric guitars that start straddling the crossover point between the electrostatic and dynamic drivers, then... We need to talk about the treble. Its utterly confusing to me and its simultaneously the best and worst thing about this IEM. There are times, several times, on the right kinds of songs where the treble is able to come through with incredible detail, incredible soundstage, and incredible imaging that edges out my HE-400S in the right circumstances. Its mindblowing, it has no right being on a $130 IEM... but then there's the lower treble, where the mids and treble meet and the Tape seems to be crossing over between the dynamic driver and the electrostatic. On the wrong songs, male vocals will sound weirdly artificial, and when you present a song with more complex things going on in the upper-mids/lower-treble, the reason starts to become obvious. Layered electric guitars or strong reverb here in the range build until they, well, distort. With enough going on in that range, it just creates noise that pervades the entire treble range and starts to drown out everything that was good and makes those songs essentially unlistenable. I tried different amps (including a JDS Labs Atom), different sources, and some Dekoni foam tips just to see if any of these could resolve the problem, but all fell flat in the end. Now, I don't want to give the impression that I've given up on Shuoer here or that you should either. The things that went right were, again, incredible. I look forward for what they may be able to do in the future with more balanced and more neutral IEMs in the future using this electrostatic driver. Maybe an IEM with a three-way crossover between a dynamic, a balanced armature, and the electrostatic driver with a neutral FR could fix the problems I've named while keeping the punchy bass and the unexpected detail retrieval. They seem to have more potential by using this as a basis for a more expensive and complex design. That's really it. If you listen to a lot of pop, a lot of female vocalists or electronic music, you may still be able to enjoy the incredible qualities of the Tape, but if you listen to rock, rap, even country, or mostly male vocalists in general, steer away and look for something more neutral. ... show more

    • Great Sound but Fit Could be Better.

This IEM reminds me of the KZ ZS6, both in terms of its metal housing and its extended highs. It is, of course more refined than that piece. This begins with the cylindrical packaging with its piano motif. A metal case is included, but it's on the small side. The cable is decent enough but I replaced it with a Linsoul balanced 4.4 mm cable soon after arrival. The MMCX connectors seem a bit fiddly. Compared with the Tin Audio P1, the Tape is more efficient and has more extended highs. The P1 is warmer and more natural. It's not a question of which is better, more a question of taste. I would give a slight edge overall to the Tape. I like detail. My main complaint is the fit--not a problem with the seal but they won't stay in my ears when I walk. So I use them at home. YMMV. I have no doubt that these would have sold for closer to 200 a few years ago.the sound to my ears is very clean and detailed without sounding harsh. To get a better cable, I would expect to pay 30 dollars easy..if I had to pick something negative , is that the eartips are junk.the stems are too flimsy.i have other iem so I have plenty of spare eartips!! update .after defending the built quality on headfi, my right bud has very low volume compared to the left. Shame because I just got them to fit the way I wanted...the sound went back to normal wtf! ... show more
