  • Died after 10 months, Horrible Lynksys customer service (>1 hr on phone for a warrantied item) - Brutal
Capacity: 13" x 8.8" x 6.7" Model: AC1200
As a preface, I am a chemical engineer, 36, and no stranger to techy stuff. Bought this in July 25, 2016. At the time of this writing, June 30, 2017 (less than 1 yr later). Unit crapped out. Stopped showing up in the wireless list. Troubleshooted by hard connecting the extender to my computer via ethernet and could not even get into the unit via IP address. Also tried resetting many times. It was clearly dead. Then was on the phone with Lynksys for over an hour doing all of the diagnostic tests that I tried and confirmed for them that I tried. They had me changing subnet masks, Ip addresses, etc and it still did not connect. The girl on the phone was clearly following a script. I was getting so frustrated. The unit is clearly dead, NFG. So far its been 59 minutes and I told her all I want is to return this unit for a new one as I am under the 1 yr for the warranty. But I can't process the claim without going through their hoops. I got put on hold a few times for 5 minutes each time during the 1+ hour period. This is completely brutal service. I don't know what else to say. If it does not break down it will be good. If it does break down like mine did after less than 1 yr then you screwed. I do not recommend. ... show more

  • WiFi Coverage for Your Entire McMansion
Capacity: 0.5" x 6.1" x 1.7" Model: AC1200
I live in a 4,200 square foot McMansion that has a large patio out back. My main router has to be located in my front study, which means my home theater, garage, back upstairs bedroom, and back patio have been without WiFi coverage for the past 6 years. I purchased this extender hoping to extend coverage to those areas, and it worked beautifully. Setup was very easy. I used the Spot Finder feature to determine that placing the extender 10 feet in the air in my main living area (on top of our very tall entertainment armoire) is the best location for reaching the target areas. Then, I used WiFi Analyzer on my Droid phone to check the signals all over the house to verify coverage. Once everything was set to my liking, I clicked the "Make the Same as Router" boxes to make the SSIDs the same, and all of my devices seamlessly switch back and forth between the extender and the main router as I walk around the house. Signal strength has improved between 10 and 20 dBm in the target areas, and I finally have WiFi everywhere. I am very pleased with this purchase. ... show more

  • Has significant wifi speed loss
Capacity: 0.5" x 6.1" x 1.7" Model: AC1200
I bought this extender due to a dead spot in my daughter's bedroom and a few parts of my basement. This extender fills in admirably but only provides about 1/4 of my wifi speed even after having used the wifi analyzer to find the "optimal" location. I don't want to give off the impression that the speed is extremely low but with my 200mb/s speed I am only getting a max wifi speed of 58mb/s when using speed test. And before anyone asks, I'm using the 5ghz channel on the router and still getting those speeds. Pro: - Decent wifi pass through speed - Durable. I've had this thing for over a year and have had 0 issues - Easy Set up. The wizard takes you through set up in a blast and helps you find the optimal location for the extender. - Useful indicator light. Most indicator lights in my experience are close to useless or are not giving you clear information. This extender has 1 indicator light and if it is red, you need to move it to a better location or check the configuration, if it is white then everything is good to go. Con: - Wifi speed may not be suitable at lower wifi speeds (especially at xfinity's 25mbs or less tier where pass through speeds will be insufficient for consistent streaming) - No automatic firmware updates. This may not seem like a major deal to most users but the firmware on the extender has to be manually updated from the configuration screen. This means imporatant updates, including those that cover security flaws, are not given any type of automatic patch or even a notification that they are needed. ... show more

  • BUY THE HIGH GAIN MODEL, not the base standard version.
Capacity: 0.5" x 6.1" x 1.7" Model: AC1200
There are 2 versions of this unit, one HG (high gain) with extended longer antennas, and the base unit with short antennas. I own both units. The short antenna unit is worthless, it is about 25 feet away and upstairs from the base wireless router and it can't even pick up the signal to transmit past 2 walls. I bought the HG long antenna unit and have it placed OUTDOORS in a plastic container to protect from rain (temporary use) and holes cutout for the antennas exposed. This HG unit transmits a strong enough signal while OUTDOORS about 50 feet to our POOL HOUSE where I have webcams in the front and rear rooms, and it is (barely) enough for the back room webcam's required signal strength - so the HG works. The short antenna unit is on the second floor of our house and barely can transmit from the inside of the house, through about 2 walls to an outside wifi camera, and drops connections. Why a company shortchanges itself and sells 2 models of the same base unit with different antennas makes me wonder what they are thinking. It's like selling the same Mercedes, one with 12 inch wheels the other with 19 inch wheels. WHY? Just do the best product, not some substandard version. ... show more
