A lot of what I photograph is celestial - nebula, stars, Sun, Moon - I've photographed them all. This is not a great camera for that. Too much chromatic aberration (purplish fringe around stars) and too small an aperture to really get much of any detail on the Sun or Moon. Even focusing on sunspots was a chore - and they still did not come out well. And the Moon would have a lot of purple in it. However, during the day - PROVIDED YOU HAVE A TRIPOD - this is a decent performer for someone looking for a manual-only, very long focal length lens for very little cash. The image of the wind turbine is not bad. There's a bit of CA still, but it's not terrible. And that turbine is 3,000 feet from my house - about 6-10 of a mile. That's a lot of detail for being that far away! And even closer objects are pretty good. Bokeh is surprisingly nice. And while there's some color fringing that can be seen, it's not awful even in bright sunlit images. All of the photos I took and shared here are completely straight-off-the-camera - zero retouching by me. The focus IS hard to get right. But it's going to be, because you can zoom in a LOT with it, and you have to do it manually. So you're not going to get action sports shots with it, especially not at the very stopped-down f8 of f16 it forces you to use. But a $67 lens? Yeah, it's worth giving it a shot. So I'm a full time filmmaker and I saw this 800mm telephoto for $67. I had to try it. It is more of a telescope than a telephoto and of course at this price level is from f8 (420mm) to f16 (at 800mm). So the applications are VERY limited. And yes it is manual focus and does not have anything else (not surprising and expected at this price level) so no IS, no iris adjustment ... nothing. Honestly this would have been perfect for the solar eclipse. Just add an ND filter and if would have been killer. I took it out for a spin on my backyard without tripod. BIG mistake. I should have gotten a tripod and an external monitor to pull focus. The focus breathing is not bad but handheld it was impossible to pull accurate focus. Not blaming the lens, but everything look a bit soft. At any rate its a fun toy as I said before. Don't know what would be a real world application for that, but have to admit, it was fun playing with it. ... show more

Been trying this out on a few different cameras. I was hoping i could use it for astrophotos or maybe super telephoto nature stuff. But it's just not that great. Optics aside, just trying to use the lens is very frustrating. I am used to all manual lenses as i am a photographer, but this is the worst ive used. Manual focusing is a nightmare, the focus ring is very stiff and moves the whole lens when i try to focus. You have to unlock a lock ring to be able to zoom in and out. Not great ... show more

Okay lets be real, high end telephoto lenses can (and do) cost thousands of dollars, so as long as you're realistic and understand what to expect for less than $100 (at review time), then this is a fine telephoto zoom lens for the price. Our test photos, shot on an old Canon T2i were tolerable, not super sharp, but again, okay for the super low price. Putting the camera in manual there is no F-stop adjustment (and it doesn't read out the 8.3), so we generally controlled brightness with ISO and/or shutter speed. In auto mode (not recommended by the manufacturer) our camera took the shutter speed down way too low for a lens this size, so back to manual and we were good. As no lens at this price would have Image Stabilization, you absolutely need a tripod or monopod, as there is just now way to hold it steady in your hand, especially when fully extended. The EF mount felt secure, and honestly that was a pleasant surprise because it takes some engineering and quality control to get that right. Good little lens for a crazy low price, and I'll definitely try to get out to our bayou areas for some wildlife shots for Facebook. ... show more

The camera, the lens works, great. I have to figure out my exposure settings because it's taking pictures of far off things, but I think because of the brightness of mine, It looks a little dark in every picture. But that's more of a me and my settings thing than the actual lens but as far as lenses goes, it's made out of sturdy enough material. I don't have any problems when sliding to Zoom, or twisting to. Focused or anything of that nature. So, It's got 8 out of 10 for me. I thought it came with like a little handlebar that goes on the front, but it doesn't. So, I just got to hold it with my hand instead of having it level. This is a great lens for the price. ... show more

This Canon EF-mount lens is a simple lens and as a result, the images are nice and clear. The controls are clearly marked and feel smooth. This 420-800mm lens is an inexpensive way to get into wildlife or astrophotograly.
