The mattress started making the inflation shhhhhhhhhh as soon as the outer layer was released. The second layer of vacuum pack plastic slit easily with the tool. BOOSH THWUMP it went big fast. Did I read the instructions? Yes! Yes I did. Very nice tidy instructions! Did I ignore them and promptly lay down on it? Yes! Yes I did! Soft, supportive. I can't tell if it's medium or firm. The mattress is quite good. I have been using it for a while. It is quite comfortable to sleep on. You can't sleep on something too soft. This is suitable. I used a relatively hard mattress before and it was very uncomfortable. This one also has a centimeter of latex padding on top, which is a nice touch. There is no smell after opening. Despite this being a 12-inch mattress instead of a 14, this matress was surprisingly soft! I even like it better than my memory foam mattress! Like a memory foam mattress the top layer has a slight amount of memory to it in which it will conform to your body shape when your back sleeping, however unlike a memory foam mattress the shape will recoil a lot quicker when you move around. To me the reforming of the mattress is much better because when you're moving around you don't have to worry about those indentations in your mattress that you feel for a while when you shift around on a memory foam mattress. On top of that the plush layer on top of the mattress feels so much soft and warmer compared to my memory foam mattress that I feel I don't even need to put a mattress topper on it. I weigh about 205 pounds, so when I'm laying on this on my back or on my side I don't really feel any springs (though you definitely will feel the crunchiness of the springs on your butt if you're sitting upright on this mattress). Packaging wise it comes in a fairly tall box and I'd say the weight is at least 60 lb. Being a guy I was able to carry this by myself by putting it over my shoulders and carrying it around the middle. The mattress comes rolled up and really sealed well in a plastic bag. I appreciate that they packaged an easy cut blade so that way you can cut the plastic without accidentally cutting the mattress; Don't use scissors or a box cutter to open, this use the blade that comes with the box! As soon as you cut into the plastic the air and the mattress will immediately start to be sucked in and conform to its proper shape. Be sure to have plenty of room around it when you start doing so because it happens pretty quickly. Though I believe this mattress could probably reinflate in about 12 hours I'd say go ahead and give it either a good 24 to 48 hours to properly get its full shape in. We got this to replace our 14 year old's twin bed. She was having sleep problems prior to this mattress, since using this new one, she sleeps much more sound. The mattress comes rolled up in air tight packaging and is easy to move around. When the frame is set, you just open it on top of it and it expands in place.
