I love using these as a seed starter for peppers, tomatoes, and herbs. It absorbs quickly and holds water well. I far prefer using tablets like this because they're so easy to store and don't take up too much space. I can just rehydrate small amounts as needed.

    • Convenient but you'll need nutrients
These coir disks are great because they're so compact and I use them in a pinch when I need extra soil for something (like to top off a plant) but I wouldn't make it the only medium for potting a plant. It just doesn't have the nutrients needed to sustain a plant beautifully. A plant would probably still grow but you would need to add fertilizer, nutrients, and so on. I still love these though, it's so satisfying to see them grow when you wet them! ... show more

They were slightly thinner than the 0.5 inches stated in the listing, and they broke apart when trying to expand them, but they did make a fair amount of peat, considering their size. They get the job done, and that's what matters.

These coconut coir discs are a great size when I want to amend a pot or two of soil, instead of soaking and needing to use up a huge brick. This coir is very absorbent and holds water quite well, and is excellent for helping keep my plants moist during dry months. These discs are also nice for using in seed starter trays, and they rehydrate quickly. I'm quite happy with these coir discs, and they're greaet to have in my gardening cabinet when needed.     • Perfect for 2" starter pots
I had planned to use these to start perennials in 12-cell starter trays with individual cells that are just under 1 1/2". Boy, did these pellets expand! I quickly switched to 2" pots and that's the perfect size for these pellets. They expanded nicely and hold water well. Being coir, they are fairly sterile and resistant to fungal infestation, so I am able to keep seedlings in them until they are ready to be planted out this Fall. Next Spring, I will use these pellets in my 5" deep starter trays. The coir will fill the cells about halfway, which is perfect for starting peppers and tomatoes. As the seedlings grow to the top of the cells, I will fill them in with a perlite and compost mix. I am committed to eliminating peat from my soilless mixes, so these coir pellets are the way to go.
