In my case all it does is poke a small hole in the blockage but has failed every time to clear it. I had a galvanized pipe in the basement that would clog several times a year. I finally replaced it.

It worked...once. I sent it all the way down the drain. There's no marking to let you know when you reach the end of the snake, so I just kept going assuming I'd see a mark and the snake snapped off the drum.
