  • GREAT STARTER BOOK FOR SENIORS - LAPTOPS
I originally bought this book for my Mom who recently purchased her first laptop and is struggling with it. However, she also bought the same book. Since she is 2500 miles away from me, we can look things up together now to trouble shoot when she gets stuck. She will be taking beginner classes in October at the Senior Center. I looked through the book and found some really good information even though I've been using computers for over 20 years. And I recently purchased my first laptop last November. I also purchased the book "Is This Thing On" by Abbey Stokes. That's another good reference book for beginners although it's not written with Windows 7 Operating System. It's an older version and she needs to update her book with the new OS. I would recommend this book to everyone, young or old. ... show more

  • For Absolute Beginners Only
If you've owned a laptop or do now and have for even a little while, this book is not for you. You know more than it can really teach you already and though it might serve as a refresher course, there isn't a great deal of "new" information. Perhaps I mis-interpreted the title but I had not expected to be told how to turn it on in detail. Ms. Muir goes into almost tedious detail on everything, she seems to feel that in writing for seniors we're all about the mental capacity of undemanding three year olds and the only way to make sure we "get it" is by rote. I have no interest in her chapters on how to play games or how to be safe on line, if I'm reduced to that, I'm already in trouble. Again, perhaps I expected to learn how to do things that are relevant to me but after several hours with the book, I couldn't find much new or different or interesting. If you're at the absolute entry level, this may be of help. It's in big print which is a help for older eyes but the content is pretty small beer. ... show more

  • I ordered this book for a 77 year old friend.
She had never used or owner a PC before. She wanted to learn, but was not sure it was a good idea at her age. To me she was perfect for the experience. She was eager and focused on learning. She somehow knew it would change her life. I encouraged her, and finally we went to the store, and picked out a laptop and I ordered the book. When the book arrived she read it carefully and with a little help she really blossomed. She never lost her nerve or became fearful. Now she is a guru. I get her emails daily and her life really has changed. She has no car and uses a wheelchair to get around, so the internet brought a whole new world to her door. I encourage anyone who is contemplating learning and using a computer to do so. The book is a great help. ... show more

  • Helpful, but....
A helpful "dummies edition" but wish there was more info on which laptop to purchase, which is why I bought the book. The author states there are just too many brands and selection is personal choice. The result is a too brief section on selection; so I am still not sure what to buy.

  • excellent help
This dummies book is perfect for the non-techno senior. It assumes you know nothing and builds from ground zero one step at a time.
