  • A convenient Nespresso-compatible system if you want high volume
Style: Black/Champagne
The L'OR Barista system is a Nespresso-compatible coffee pod brewer from Philips, a well known appliance maker. We've been longtime fans of Nespresso for our everyday morning coffee; the aluminum pods are recyclable, which helps cut down on waste substantially while keeping coffee fresh, and the fast brew time means we can make a rapid Americano at 8:59 AM before our first morning meeting. The L'OR has a trick up its sleeve: it also accepts larger L'OR specific pods that produce a full 12oz cup of coffee. These are currently pretty expensive, because there aren't a lot of companies producing them, but Peet's is available, and those just so happen to be our personal favorite Nespresso pods - so we're quite happy with the quality, even if the selection is a little limited and the price is a little inflated. Our Nespresso history includes a CitiZ machine, which lasted us for years before the pump started making sad-coffee-maker noises, and a Breville Essenza Mini, which we were using before the L'OR arrived. We find all three machines make identical coffee with the same pods. We weren't in love with the Essenza, though - despite a Wirecutter recommendation that there was no reason to buy a larger machine, we found the tiny amount of used pod storage, the small water reservoir and the lack of space for a larger coffee mug were nuisances we had a bit of buyer's remorse over. With the larger footprint of the L'OR, all three of these concerns are solved. I will say the L'OR is a little more plasticky and a little less elegant and refined than the Nespresso machines. The Nespresso machines feel more substantial, and the slanted sides of the L'OR unnecessarily take up a little extra countertop space in a way I'm not a huge fan of. The most egregious part is the dual-spout piece that is supposed to resemble a fancy Jura-style machine, but which is actually a flimsy plastic divider that likes to fall out and which you have to remember to clean... I'd definitely leave off that unwanted "feature" on a V2 of this machine. We tried reusable pods in this machine with metal lids without success - the resulting coffee was too weak, even after tamping and packing them entirely full. That matches our experience with the Nespresso system - the only DIY pods we found that worked are ones with a peel and stick foil lid, and that style pod isn't available for the large format L'OR yet. Maybe someday, but for now, I wouldn't buy this with the fantasy that you'll be able to fill the pods yourself. Finally, the L'OR site rejected my serial number when trying to register for the included pod discount offer, which was really frustrating, but not ultimately a huge deal as I prefer to order elsewhere anyway. All in all, if you're looking for a Nespresso-compatible machine with a larger water tank and discard well which can occasionally make a very high quality larger coffee, this is well worth consideration. I appreciate we were able to add the larger pod support without giving up compatibility with the widely available, popular classic Nespresso pods. Just be aware the big pods are expensive for now. ... show more

  • All I can say is this is a step up from the coffee machine that I have.
Style: Black/Champagne
I received the L’OR Barista System Coffee and espresso Machine Combo, Black/Champagne. I drink coffee twice a day daily. First cup is black and the second cup with a creamer and oat milk. I have been using kurig forever. I usually use 8oz of coffee when I am using cream and oat milk. When I drink it black I use 12 ounces. I never use the 10oz on the kurig so I will not miss it for sure. Of course I am going to love the espresso. I thought I was going to get a starter coffee and espresso set with the L’OR but I did not. I ordered the pumpkin spice coffee and the multi-flavored espresso. I thought that there were samples inside the box and it was not. To me, the coffee and espresso is really not that expensive I receive 60 pods for $50.00. Less than a dollar a cup compared to expensive coffee shops. I am keeping my kurig for now because I have much coffee left and will use it up. The tank on the L’Or is smaller than the kurig. Also, the L’Or Barista System is smaller than my kurig which is a plus. It takes up less room which is needed. I will miss the larger tank on the Keurig. I miss it already. I also purchased some Expresso glass cups too. I am ready. The coffee selection is huge. Very easy to assemble. I was a little frightened because I had to put the gray thing into the nozzle and then attach the nozzle and hear the click. It was easy. Before using I did run clear water through it. It does heat very fast. Also, once the coffee pod is completed the pod drops down in a container right in the front. You can see when it fills up. I love that because with the Keurig I was always leaving the pod in it. All I can say is wow. I first tried the caramel expresso. Oh my goodness the aroma. I could not wait to taste it black. All I can say is amazing. Amazing. I have a frother of my own. So I made the largest expresso less than 4 ounces then I made hot foam and it is amazing I am drinking right now. Wow. So Yummy. I hope this does not make me drink more coffee. All I can say it does not taste like my kurig coffee. Expensive coffee shops watch out. ... show more
