  • Complicated
It is complicated to set up and to use. If you’re looking for a straightforward printer, keep looking.

  • Excellent Printer w/a few warts
There is a lot to love about this Kyocera family of printers. The printer produces beautiful output for a color laser printer, even photo images are more than acceptable quality with very little evidence of banding or unevenness. Text is super crisp, whether it's color or B&W. The printer comes out out sleep super quickly, consumes very little power in standby. Thus, it is a great platform for a SOHO setting. My various OS' (Windows, Linux, and MacOS) had zero issues recognizing the printer and almost immediately producing beautiful output. Wether it's Airprint, Windows SMB, or IPP, this printer produces excellent work. The large built-in paper tray is a joy to work with, as its capacity allows full reams to disappear into the machine. The 4500, 4000, and 3500 are seemingly built on the same basic chassis, with minor differences. Unfortunately, Kyocera does a poor job differentiating these three printers, other than by exterior color and print-speed. As a consumer, you have to look closely through the spec sheets and marketing images to see what each model adds/omits. For whatever reason, Kyocera feels no need to illustrate these differences clearly, such as the improved color display or HyPas, which are exclusive to the 4500. As best as I can tell, the 4500 is the stepping stone to the even more commercial 5000 and up series, with lots of add-ons in a similar black shade and more commercial & security features than the 4000 & 3500 (NFC cards enabling secured print as a option, for example). I needed none of those features and liked the lower standby power of the 4000 series. All three models come with 1GB of RAM, expandable to 3GB via the SD-144-2GB module, which is a oddball UDIMM with 144-pins. The 4000 and the 4500 are a bit taller than the 3500 to accommodate more paper in the output bin, and the toner cartridges vary by unit to allow value pricing (the cartridges that go into the 4500 allegedly yield more pages at a lower $/page cost than the 4000, 3500) Other OEMs attempt to upsell you on value-priced features right on the printer page, such as additional paper trays, HDDs, or Typefont cartridges. Kyocera makes you hunt for the relevant info in their brochure. I wish the folk doing the marketing and web-layout spent a bit more time on how to sell this printer into the SOHO market via the web rather than relying on sales reps to do it for them. ... show more
