  • LOVE this ratchet style grinder and strongly recommend it over most twist grinders, even those at a much higher price point
UPDATE; I have 3 of these updated. This green one broke. The quality of the ratchet mechanism for the newer model fo this (with the ball handle) grinder is not as smooth as the original design. This actually stopped ratcheting and broke within a month of purchase with light use. So far the Red one I bought with it has a milder version of the same issue but is still working. Becasue two are still working, I am dropping this from 4 stars to 3 but I wouldn't buy it again. Hey Kuhn Rikon... BRING back the original design!!!!!!!!!!! That is 5-star Plus and I have had those for years without any degration in performance or capability. ------------------------ 4-star ------------------------ The Kuhn Rikon Ratchet Grinder is my favorite spice grinder of this size. The only grinder I like as well is for a larger portion (cup+) and is also made by Kuhn Rikon (Separate topic). I highly recommend this grinder. NOTE: I have nerve damage and MS so I am a bit picky not just the quality and range (fine to course) of the grinder itself, but I am quite focused on the Human Factors Engineering associated with the product. Effectively, how easy is it to use for someone with grip issues and or strength issues (for arthritis, neuropathy, etc.) and how easy is it to clean and maintain. This gets a 5-star on the ease of use. I own 4 of these and have purchased them as gifts for others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **** Pros **** + Grinding range is among the best I have used - I would give it a B+. It's the best in this price range for sure [ see Pro & Con Details ]. + Improved capacity over it's predecessor so you refill it less often (I would say maybe half again as much as prior design) + Uses a ceramic grinding mechanism rather than a casted-metal found in many grinders in this price range. + Easy to hold/ grip while ratchet grinding which keeps the spice in one location if that is your goal (as opposed to grinding over a large area) + Minimal, if any, vibration felt back into the gripping or grinding hand [ see Pro & Con Details ]. **** Cons **** - can be expensive for a plastic case grinder [ Retail $24.00 in some brick & mortar places but roughly $14 to $18 online ] - can be tricky to fill without spilling corns and or spices [ see Pro & Con Details ] - tricky to clean compared to traditional twist grinders (but worth it) - plastic storage area rather than glass (but likely how they get the price point down since it uses a ceramic grinding mechanism) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recommended Usage ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Great for small amounts as opposed to using say a dedicated coffee grinder for larger amounts * Great for a consistent mix of spices you use frequently (ex. Himalayan Sea Salt, Dried granulated Garlic and Dried Granulated Onion) but are sensitive to humidity. Refilling these weekly to monthly is better from humidity controlled storage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Limits of this grinder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * As with most inexpensive grinders, you need to be careful with which spices and how you use it. Some require a Mill as opposed to a grinder. For the harder spices and herbs, consider the Vase Style Kuhn Rikon Grinder Mill as it is a larger capacity and glass storage area. It also uses a ceramic grinding mechanism but uses a twist style. It is more expensive but is rated for such things and can produce a powder. * It does not power anything well so this will not take the place of a planer-grinder that you would use for cinnamon stick as one example. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pro & Con - DETAILS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Grinding range is among the best I have used - I would give it a B+ in that it does well on the course and fine range with a mid level of Course & Fine also coming out well. The ranges in between the mid-point and the fine/ mid-point and the course are less distinguishable than say the Peugeot twist grinders I have for example. Of course, those are VERY spendy spice grinders with grinding mechanisms and they range in price from $32 to $100+. So... the Kuhn Rikon is pretty darn good for an inexpensive grinder. I am not a chef by any means but I do cook so this meets or exceeds my needs without breaking the bank. + Minimal, if any, vibration felt back into the gripping or grinding hand. For coarser spices in the form of corns as one example, some grinders have you feel the vibration into one or both hands and arms. This is not a big deal for most people. However, if you have arthritis, neuropathy, diabetic nerve pain, etc., that minimal vibration can feel like electric shock up your hands and arms that you feel for not just the moment it happens, but sometimes kicks off hours of sensitivity if not that electric shock sensation the entire time. - Grinder can be tricky to fill without spilling corns and or spices. Filling requires a small, wide funnel to fill without spilling source product. I occasionally use a tapered paper funnel, that I make on the fly with copy paper and scotch-tape OR a #1/ #2 V-shape coffee filter. The current Rikon model (as pictured with the ball on the ratchet handle) has a wider fill door than the original design of this grinder that has a longer, thicker and smooth ratchet handle. Though I prefer the longer and thicker ratchet handle for gripping, aesthetics and effort for grinding, the current design is still effective on all those points with a larger capacity. * Note, the new design with the ball on the ratchet handle also is a bit shorter than the original design so it can stand upright on shorter shelf than the original design requires. This is not a big deal as the original design is harder to find but it is something to note if you have the choice. Half-inch difference in height and the circumference of the storage area is slightly larger footprint. I did not receive any free items to test nor do I have any connection to Kuhn Rikon. Since I recommended two of their products in this review, I wanted to address that within the scope of this review. ... show more

  • It don't break!
I had a fancy brass pepper grinder, and you really have to maintain it. Otherwise it tarnishes and makes it look like some artifact from the days of the Camelot. I've tried other hand grinders I bought at a local Target store, then the handle broke off while turning it.... I found this on Amazon where you don't have to turn the handle, which in terms, the handle don't break off. It's a rocker lever, and it works! It also has a grain adjustment on the bottom from fine to coarse. Made in Switzerland, with a damn good mechanism! ... show more

  • High Performace...Yes!
This is my first experience with this particular type of grinder, having worn out some others. It is, in a word, impressive. I chose it almost out of frustration, over an apparent lack of interest on behalf of a popular "English" grinder brand to provide parts. Anyway, back to topic. This ratchet grinder works like a dream. Just an easy back and forth movement of the handle lays down a beautiful, uniform swath of perfect particles. I found it easy to fill, using a flatware teaspoon. It is also easier to stow than it may appear, as the handle can be left in an advantaged position. I bought the green one because it was priced lower. I like it so much, it lives on the counter! But speaking of value, the early performance of this Chinese fabrication is very high, at about half what one would expect to pay. Get yours now before the tariff jumps the price. ... show more

  • Hands wore out, pepper grinder did not
On the right is the pepper grinder I bought 40 years ago. It still works great. Sadly the hands that work the grinder are working considerably less well than they did 40 years ago. On the left is my new ergonomically friendly ratcheting pepper grinder. So much easier to use. I loved my old pepper grinder, but after an injury this summer on top of the inevitable osteoarthritis that comes with age in my family, I have found that I need new tools to carry on with normal activities. I've found Kuhn Rikon kitchen tools to be very aging/injured/arthritic friendly. I don't know if this grinder will last 40+ years like my old one, but I was able to grind pepper into my soup just now without any pain. The green is very cheerful. ... show more

  • Best pepper grinder ever!
A friend recommended this pepper grinder, and I'm totally loving it - and I don't even like black pepper much! It has a wide range in terms of the grind and is easy to adjust - I can't stand biting into big chunks of black pepper, so the finer setting is perfect for me for most uses. There are times when you'd want a rougher crack - like for steak au poivre - and this grinder can give you that as well, and adjusts easily. Whatever setting you use, I appreciate that it grinds very uniformly. It's easy and oddly fun to use (the crank handle is so satisfying!), and super simple to refill - no disassembly required, you just open the little slot on the side. I've been in search of just a good pepper grinder that wasn't too expensive for a long time, and I finally found on that is beyond good and reasonably priced. ... show more

  • it is the best pepper grinder I have ever had
While it is definitely pricey, it is the best pepper grinder I have ever had: it is efficient, it does not spill pepper all over, and it is fun to use. And it's super convenient to put pepper in - just open a small window on its side (no need in screwing and unscrewing various parts). Oh, one little detail: I washed mine before using it, and it was a bit hard to get it to dry. I thought it was dry after a day or so, put the pepper in, and it came out as a wet paste. I tried to dry the insides with a napkin, and it was not a very exciting procedure, as the grinder does not really open up, and the only access to the inside area is the small window for putting the pepper in. This being said, I love having this grinder and using it in my kitchen. ... show more
