  • Already paid for itself
To be clear, this is my first espresso machine. For years I have toiled out much hard earned money for that savory sweet espresso from coffee shops but always assumed the mystical process was somehow beyond my reckoning. Thanks to the college where I work having installed a Starbucks recently, I suddenly found myself spending too much there and figured that I would give it a go. Picking out an espresso machine leaves you with little in between, there are 40-100$ range models, and then you start getting fancy and pricey exponentially quick from there. As this was an experiment, I wanted something in the under 100 category and finally settled on this model after browsing the variety. We have had the machine for a little under a week but it has already earned its keep; here's my thoughts. Pros: Affordable, simple, nice looking, easy to clean, effective, quick. For the price, this machine is great, truly. It takes a little bit of practice to get the whole system down, but after about three or four uses I had it pretty much figured out. Now, after having made about a dozen drinks with it, from start to finish its takes under 10 minutes to make the drink and do a basic clean up. The instructions are a bit odd but with a little getting used to, it makes good and easy sense. A few things to keep in mind: only use as much water as you will use (don't overfill) and always let the steam run out when you shut the machine down (letting steam stay in the line will kill a steam system - I've done it to a steam mop personally). When you are done making the drink, unplug it. The element in the tank is super hot and while it seems really sturdy , leaving an element on with no water is very dangerous. After everything cools down a bit disassembly and clean up is really easy and quick. Cons: Steam nozzle doesn't swivel, very basic. The only real con I can see so far is the steam nozzle is a bit annoying to get to, particularly if you are using a tall cup. In such a case, I have to pull the machine close to the edge of the counter and turn it so I can squeeze the cup up to the nozzle. This is not a huge con and perhaps the lack of swivel action might make it sturdier in the long run, thus not a major complaint as it is easily overcome. Some might find this model just too basic, as it is essentially just the bare-bones model. However, I would rather have a basic model from a good name brand company (Krups has great customer service ratings) than a higher end model from a questionable company. All in all this unit is a 5 star no-brainer if for no other reason than it has literally already paid for itself. Now, every day that I go to work and I wave to the Starbucks folks without stopping in, I'm not spending another 4 or 5 bucks. Now I'm just drinking in the profit, so even if it doesn't last forever, I can live with that; it's earned its keep. ... show more

  • This is OK.
I use this daily now. I had another brand that was better but I had to leave it at a remote location. Good: Fast and silent. The top platform is convenient for setting parts on when done. The top cap is nice and wide so it gives great leverage when opening and sealing. The pitcher is well built and its top snaps into place and stays in place when pouring the coffee. Bad: Coffee filter is not keyed with slot... so it comes with the flimsey plastic retainer flip to hold the filter in place when dumping the extremely hot coffee grounds. The plastic flip has come off several times. Probably their designers just never compared or considered this. The frothing nozzel is too close to the stage, so I carefully bent it outwards to have room to froth easily. All in all it was a fair price and it works. I prefer a simple machine like this. Added after reading other reviews: All frothing nozzels clog with use, and you should use final pressure of the vessel to blow the nozzel clean. I also forgot and it clogged. But cleaning is easy. And buildup is removed with white vinagre, just fill the pitcher with white vinegre and prop it up so the nozzel is submerged. The buildup practically falls off. FYI. I use Cafe Britt from Costa Rica, regular grind. The mud is just a function of the size of the grind and all ground coffee has a percentage of smaller particles. Just pour your coffee instead of dumping it into your cup. Leave the remaining mud in the pitcher. Really not an issue, unless you are stubborn and insist on using a grind that is too fine. BTW, this machine makes great cafe con leche/cappuccino. ... show more

  • I've owned three over a 20 year span
I like making my own cappccino occaisionally, and this basic Krups has always worked for me. The original had a screw valve on the right nearer the frothing spigot adjusting the steam pressure between the frothing stem and the grind cup. not really necesssary. This iteration has a three position nob directiing pressure to total steam OR to the grind cup. You can make a cup of sweetened cappuccino in 7 minutes. Fill the beaker up to the chrome ring with water, add to the machine screw the cap on and start the unit putting the select coffee to the brew position (a light will come on). while it heats, grind about 40 beans fine and spoon into the grind cup while its inserted in the handle press (pack lightly) , raise the handled grind press to the underside of the machine with the handle towards the left and turn horizontally to the right untill the seal is tight (you'll figure it out). Add an inch or so of cream to a large coffee cup and spoon in a tablespoon of sugar. Get a paper towel , fold in half, fold one triangle corner and wet that small corner liberally, set next to the steam spigot. Steam your cream by waiting until you see coffee beginning to drip for a few seconds, then turn the select nob to steamwhen you get steam, move the nob back to brew and place coffee cup under the spigot until the end of it is JUSTbelow the surface, than return the select nob to steam (this prevents splatter.) after about twenty seconds of steaming, slightly lower the cup so the foamed cream slowly raises in the cup (this happens naturally) when the cup is 3/4 full of foamed cream, turn the selector nob back to brew, and the beaker then fills with your cappuccino. AS SOON an the coffee slows to a drip in the beaker, turn the selector nob to off (light goes off) and use the wet paper towel to GINGERLY clean the spigot (CAREFUL HOT), return the selector nob to steam to thoroughly sterilize the spigot and un plug the machine, letting the steam run out. pour your cappuccino into the cup and enjoy. sounds like a lot but after the first couple cups you'll get it down. ... show more
