All the pieces are made of a sturdy metal, they don't appear like they will bend or damage easily. The classic strainer seems a bit heavy but it fits the opening of the shaker very well. Overall I would recommend this as a good set for a starting an at home bar.

First off, cocktails and mocktails are so much easier to make if you invest in a few simple tools. The taste, the clarity and temperature will all improve. This set is a great starter kit for the burgeoning mixologist. You have all of the basics here to execute just about every recipe I know. Just make sure to pair them with a good shaker (my recommendation: Boston style) and a nice heavy mixing glass. After that, it's off to YouTube to watch the masters share their secrets and teach you the art of mixing a great cocktail (I suggest Anders Erickson - you won't be disappointed. And, no, I don't know him or have any reason to recommend him other than he's great). A note on the tools...The mesh strainer is clutch, as a lot of kits leave this out. It's absolutely necessary if you want to double-strain to keep all ice, littles bits of fruit/herbs, etc. out of the finished product. This one is just right. Not too fine, not too wide. I made a great cranberry simple syrup for Thanksgiving and this guy made sure it was nice and smooth. The Julep Strainer features a welded handle, so be aware that might build up debris with heavy use. I tend to just use the Hawthorne for everything, but the Julep is a nice backup (esp. when you're hustling). The spoon is a touch shorter than I'm used to, but it's still long enough for most jobs. All in all, this is a good quality stainless steel set that should last a very long time with minimal maintenance. Cheers! ... show more

I was surprised at the quality of these tools. I expected the typical light weight metal. Not so! These are heavy! My friend picked it up and was also surprised. The hawthorne strainer is impressive. As you can see in the pictures, the spring is very tightly wound and does a great job of straining. My old hawthorne strainer looks sad in comparison. My old one would only strain out ice. This one is good enough that you really don't have to double strain to filter out muddled herbs for example. Although this set does come with a strainer for double straining if you desire to filter out any bits whatsoever. As for fit, the hawthorne strainer fits perfectly on the large side of my boston shaker as you can see in the photos. On my mixing glass, it pops in and will stay in even if I invert it just to give you an idea of the fit. You can see how pathetic my existing hawthorne strainer looks. The julep strainer is also nice. Nothing fancy. Just nice thick metal with good weight to it. You can see the fit in the photos. It is too small to use on the large side of my boston shaker, but works very well in my mixing glass. The spoon is standard. Nothing to write home about, but no negatives either. I got these for making drinks at parties. I've had them for a few months now and they've held up well. This set comes with all the hand tools needed for making a decent, no fuss cocktail. I haven't seen any rust, nothing has bent up, and they've proved dishwasher safe. Happy with this set. A great way to build up my set of 'tools' while I expand my knowledge of mixology. There’s nothing I don’t like about this cocktail set. The handle on the hawthorn strainer is shorter than average which makes holding it in place while straining a drink much easier. I tend bar at work fairly regularly so it’s gotten a workout and has held up well.

The items are sturdy stainless steel, and they all perform their intended functions well. The metal of the strainers seems to be good quality, and they wash easily without spots or tarnishing (so far, at least). The Hawthorne strainers fit my shakers well. The only item in the set that I don't love is the spoon, which is just a bit too short for a bar spoon. You really want a longer one to easily stir in a mixing glass, and it's especially too small for use with a shaker. ... show more
