You place wood that makes smoke in the box and add one lit charcoal portion on top. The smoke starts in a moment. I use a blow torch to start that one coal. Horrible. Don't believe them—it rusts!!! The black paint melted off, and now there is rust. It is horrible! I would not give it a star, but that is the only way I can tell you how horrible it was. I threw it in the trash when I saw the rust! I used it only once and look at the pictures.
