  • "California King" sized King Koil air mattress- finally, an air mattress that's nearly true-to-size!
Size: California King Color: Black
(Haven't had this a long time, but I will update this as time goes on to add any longevity pros or cons as needed.) I find that typically air mattress manufacturers consistently over-state their mattresses' size. "Queen" is typically equal to a regular bed's Full/Double, and "King", if offered, is typically a regular bed's Queen, etc... Sizes are always a weak point with buying & using an air mattress, even good ones, so I will try to be as thorough with sizing as possible and not dwell on the stuff you already know and that most other reviewers have mentioned, like height, built-in pump, ease of use, etc, stuff that applies to any size King Koil and that you probably already know. (See my pics for actual shots of laying in it for perspective). I ordered King Koil's "California King" and I have to admit, it's actually close- it's more a blend of the dimensions of a regular King (76x80) and a California King *(72x84). *Yes, California Kings are 4" narrower than regular Kings, but 4" longer. KING KOIL CALIFORNIA KING MEASUREMENTS: OVERALL: 73"x86" by my best attempts to measure (round edges make it hard to get an exact when using a tape measure)... counting outside the top edges only, not any extra side bulges. So, this is NOT counting how much room you'd need in a tent necessarily. This is fully inflated with no weight on it. Expect some minor increased width requirements when actually sleeping on it. USABLE SPACE: 63x80" counting the pillow end. MORE DETAIL: ~63" wide, x ~80" length counting the pillow edge to inside the foot edging, or about 70" length inside the pillow & foot edges. (In the pic of my legs, I am laying my head inside the pillow end, and I still have plenty of room with no danger of my feet poking out the end. I am 5'8" tall. MY IMPRESSIONS: Even only counting the usable space, the size of this one is still acceptable to me, since this places it with still 3" more usable sleeping width than a regular bed's true Queen mattress. Score! The "Queen" sized air mattresses offered by KK and most other manufacturers, being smaller than a real Queen bed, don't allow for very comfortable 2-person sleeping, unless you can deal with the always-touching, 'snuggling' kind of partnered sleeping. While there's a time for that, for my wife & I it's not all night while catching some Zs camping. INITIAL SETUP: OK I said I wouldn't dwell on this, but I'll touch on it- The pump inflated this King sizer in somewhere between 4-5 minutes, and it sounds like a quieter-than-most vacuum cleaner running. It has power-deflate, which is a nice perk that many built-in pump mattresses do not have. When fully inflated the first time, I gently got on. Not sure if you're not supposed to or what (the manual has NOTHING about initial care & break in), but I did to listen for leaks. No leaks, yay! Spent about 2 minutes on it, then got off to let it stretch. I let it sit undisturbed for 4 hrs. Then I laid back down on it. It felt full- great support! After I got off it I realized it had lost some air, the sides were quite squishy. I topped her off for several seconds until full again. The great thing about knowing this is that even when it loses some air it still feels great, supportive. No sag. Obviously there's a point where it will sag if it's low enough, but even when needing a minor top-off it feels great! COMFORT: I find it comfy for what it is. Not "hard" but not overly squishy. All air mattresses will have some bounce when a partner moves beside you, so of course you should expect that going in. But this one does a good job at minimizing that compared to previous air beds form other makers I've used. The flocked top does nothing for comfort really, since it's not squishy, but it helps not be noisy when you roll around on it, creating that awful balloon-rubbing sound. And if you add a squishy memory foam topper under the sheet you'll be in great shape! CLOSING THOUGHTS: King Koil's "California King" air mattress is recommended for being a few inches wider than a regular Queen bed (and MUCH wider than ALL so-called "Queen" air mattresses!) and right about the size of a true California King all said & done. It's big, and great for 2 people who need their space. If you're using this for camping, make sure your tent has these dimensions and then some, or at least test it out in your tent at home before you head out! MY PICTURES: 1) The mattress with 2 standard pillows for perspective 2) My feet when laying with my head inside the pillow end. I'm 5'8" and there's plenty of legroom, even more if you use the pillow end. (Side note- these socks are great, I need to review those too!) 3) Me laying comfortably inside one edge. As you see I take up 3 runs of indentations (I'm 5'8, 200lbs). Another person my size would leave approx 12" space in between both people. Finally! ... show more

  • Every Night For Two Years
Size: Queen Color: Black
I slept on this mattress every night for two years and three months (Nov. 2020 - Dec. 2022 then again Feb. 2024 - April 2024). About to order another one, as I recently had to roll it up for good. I believe an error on my end caused it to develop a bulge and leak air, not a mattress defect. Basically, with it lasting so long, I got over-confident and over-inflated it a couple of times, maybe three. As my main bed, i have a lot of praise for this puppy, and really only three drawbacks, one of which is just the nature of an air mattress. Lets start with the drawbacks: 1) When it began to leak air, I called customer service for technical assistance to troubleshoot the leak. Well, the guy refused to continue speaking or even listen to me since my mattress was out of warranty. So…hmmm. But, if the mattress was in warranty, I’m sure their customer service is perfectly fine. I assume this because they do have a fine product and probably stand behind its quality. That’s just good business unlike the customer service I received. 2) Air mattresses naturally have these pocket dips, if you will. Because I didn’t want to purchase a mattress topper, I just padded it with my spare comforter. Worked pretty darn well! 3) biggest drawback and keep in mind, I purchased mine Nov. 2020, so this feature may not be on the mattress now in Aug. 2024. Idk. But…It had this large hump to keep your pillow from slipping off the edge and onto the floor. Great idea. But my queen fitted sheet wouldn’t fit on the mattress due to this hump. Not even close. I had to buy a king fitted sheet. Now, this ended up being a good thing because the king fitted sheet covered both sides (not ends, just sides) of the bed all the way down to the floor. This protected the siding a bit in my opinion. Another unexpected “this-is-ok” about the hump was that it somewhat felt…headboard-ish…which is nice if you’re used to a normal bed frame and mattress. Let’s move to the good stuff: 1) I like a firm mattress. Check - it is a very comfortable firm. 2) I sleep in all positions, but mainly a side sleeper. Check. Support was good for my lower back. Shoulder did not hurt in the morning. Lower back would hurt occasionally if I slept on my back too much, but for me…that’s the norm no matter what mattress I sleep on. When I flip onto my stomach, it’s comfy due to the mattress having just enough give. Keep in mind, I also padded it a bit with a comforter under my fitted sheet. 3) For the first 2-3 weeks of owning it, I had to add about 5 seconds of air to it every 5-7 nights…probably due to it adjusting to its shape and newness. After that, I’d add maybe 5 seconds worth of air every 2-3 weeks. No biggie. But it was important not to add too much and overinflated. I was very careful about this…up until I got complacent and went beyond 10 seconds in one go (which as I said earlier, I think that’s why it developed a bulge and therefore a leak that I could never find.). 4) All sides are flocked. My fitted sheet would rise up a bit, but not too bad. I’m guessing if the sides where the smooth type, they would have risen up a lot. 5) the edges didn’t sink a whole lot. When they began to get a bit squishy, that’s when I knew my mattress needed an air top-off of about 5 seconds. 6) So as to not over-inflate and ruin my mattress, I felt the mattress after 5 seconds when I’d top it off. This was usually enough. It fills up quickly. If you need to go beyond 5 seconds, I recommend doing so in 3 second intervals after those first 5 seconds. Remember, once it reaches firm, it’s at capacity and you must stop. Continuing to fill it could bust the inside coils. 7) Thickness: it’s 20” off the ground. I’m a 125 lb; 5 foot, three inch female. Not too shabby to get out of bed comfortably. 8) It really has a lovely, elegant appearance. With sheets on, no one knows that, but still…it does speak to the care put into the product from the manufacturer. 9) the bag is nice. I used it twice in the two+ years of this being my only bed. I made the bed fit in there again, after two attempts to roll it to bag size. 10) It will sleep two people just like a traditional queen mattress. My feet sometimes hung off the end just a bit, but I also tend to sleep low in a bed (head not all the way at top). The hump at the top takes up some of the length, so if you’re a 6 foot+ dude, your feet may hang off a bit if you’re stretched out, but it’s really a small issue with how nice the bed is. So, my bed finally pooped out, but again, I think it was my own error. I was really happy with my bed and bummed when it bit the dust, so… I’m going to give these folks my business again and order a new one. I bet I’ll get another 2-3 years out of it. ... show more
