I got this for my husband because we have a beautiful home up north and the home has an old-fashioned fireplace where you use small pieces of wood. He puts the tool so sturdy and uses the ax to break it down as needed. He can keep hitting the log in the log splitter to get the perfect cut and size, and if he needs it smaller, he will keep going. This is so useful because it’s hard to find wood for sale in those sizes, so you either buy logs or wood chips. There is no in-between, so you need a tool like this.     • Works good with smaller logs, be careful of hard wood
This works good with smaller sections of wood, especially with softer kinds. You can get away with a bit bigger logs if the wood is soft, but I would be careful with any sort of hardwood. I would also recommend safety glasses after feeling one to many chips hitting my cheeks. The size and bag make it great for taking camping if you plan of make a small fire and don't want to have to lug around something too heavy. ... show more

First, I liked that the log splitter came with a bag *and* eye protection in a nice carrying case. The bag makes it easy to have all the parts of the log splitter in one place. And, yes, wear that eye protection! The mallet is heavy enough so one doesn't have to use too much muscle to crack a log. Getting the log on the blade/wedge takes a bit of doing, especially if the end is not cut perpendicular to the log's axis. But once on the blade, a few whacks with the mallet is all it takes to split the log -- even through a knot. The base of the splitter has these four metal and rubber "feet." I'm not sure what they're for. I split a 4-inch diameter wood with the feet installed, and the feet just got crushed. So, I took them off. I wish the blade/wedge was a bit higher off the ground than the current 9 inches so I could split longer logs. But as the photo shows, it's good enough to easily split a 15-inch long log. If one isn't planning on taking this on camping trips, I recommend mounting the splitter on a wider base. As is, the splitter had a tendency to tip over, even on the concrete patio shown in the photos. Overall, a decent product that performs very well. ... show more

This wood splitter comes with a mallet, safety goggles, and protective case for when it's not in use. It is easy to break small logs into pieces to use for firewood, bonfires, etc.
