This bassinet mattress comes compressed but once it is let out of the bag and gets air, it firms to a nice mattress. This took approximately 24 hours for the best result. It is a memory foam material, similar to adult mattresses, so it is slightly firm but still very soft. It is true to the advertised size of only approximately 1.5" in thickness. The memory foam is covered with a removable, zippered sleeve that can easily be removed for washing. It seems to be a durable, long lasting product. Dogs are tough on their beds. This was a great replacement for one that had become flat and smelly. It easily fit within the cover I already had. Better yet, this bassinet mattress has a thick, moisture resistant cover of its own that is easily washed and dried. However, I should have paid closer attention to the mattress depth measurement, which was given. The photos made this cushion look almost twice as thick as it turned out to be after it expanded from unboxing. I'd need another to match the original depth of the dog bed. So soft and comfortable. My little niece came into town and we set up my daughter's old bassinet and we needed a mattress. It was the wrong shape, but luckily it was easy to cut into the shape we needed and everything worked out. So soft!

This mattress saved the day. The mattress in the bassinet that my daughter had fell apart in the washer, but I ordered this just in time to be here that same day (not planned obviously). It states in the instructions to give the mattress 78 hours on a flat surface to expand and fill in shape properly, but I probably gave it a good 20 hours before laying her in it (she has a second bassinet that I used instead of this one). I love this mattress. It has a removable cover, making for easy cleanup and it also cushions the bed enough so that you can't feel the board directly under her.
