Description

Katy, a brave and untiring tractor, who pushes a bulldozer in the summer and a snowplow in the winter, makes it possible for the townspeople to do their jobs. In 2009, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Virginia Lee Burton's birth. As part of this celebration a glitter-cover edition of Katy and the Big Snow, complete with snowy stickers, has been created. In this enduring winter favorite from the Caldecott Medal–winner Burton, Katy the snowplow finally gets her chance to shine when a blizzard blankets the city and everyone is relying on Katy to help dig out. This new paperback is perfect for gift giving. Children love sharing Katy’s shining moment of glory and will inevitably admire her “chug, chug, chug” endurance. Read more

  • A classic for a reason
Great for reading to kids of any age. I got this along with Mike Mulligan & His Amazing Steam Shovel. They are a great combo for kids. The snow machine being female is a nice bonus. Teaches vocabulary and is easy for kids to learn to read on their own. Cute story with many good lessons. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • This is our favorite winter book
The pictures are fun and animated, older kids can follow the compass rose on the map to see where Katy will go next. We love Virginia Lee Burton, the books have a lot of words but the little kids absorb all that vocabulary and it is so good for them. We also bought this as a gift for the preschool book swap ... show more

  • Classic
This book.. it's so sweet. My young boys love all truck books. This is no exception. This is one of their favorites - they love watching Katy's progress as she digs different people and businesses out from the big storm.

  • Snow
I recall this old book from when i was a child! Then I used it many years teaching kindergarden & primary grades. Like the Snowy Day & the Big Snow this book is a way for children in states without "tons" of snow to see what big snows are like.

  • Memorable Read Aloud
I read this to my 6-year old son as part of the Five in a Row curriculum and he loved it. Recently, weeks after having heard the story, he was asked what his favorite book was and he said Katy and the Big Snow.

  • A must story for all young children.
Great story for all children who have dreams and aspirations. Even if those aspirations are not normal. Katie's biggest obstacle in the story is that she is a female snow plow. I recommend the hardcover if available. As I remember, the hardcover version told the complete story and had more realistic pictures. Still a great read for your children. ... show more

  • Another great by Burton
Virginia Lee Burton was a gift to the world. Her writing (indeed her personality I'm sure) is warm, sincere, and hopeful. As the characters in her stories come upon hard times, they never give up hope and never lose their positive hard-working attitude. Virginia Lee Burton's characters are long-suffering and gentle, enthusiastic and generous, and in Katy and the Big Snow, we are introduced to an unforgettably doughty protagonist willing to put everything she has on the line to help friends in need. The snow plow Katy is not just a snow plow. She also lends the help of her horsepower wherever and however it is needed. She is portrayed as a bulldozer and a hauler car that helps to save the waterlogged automotive machinery. In the winter, Katy is converted to a snow plow and clears the roads. When a snow storm sweeps across Geoppolis, it is up to Katy to save the day. Katy the snow plow emerges as the last vehicle standing that might still have a chance of braving the piled-up drifts to clear the roads for emergency personnel to use. As the urgent requests for assistance mount up and begin to take their toll on Katy, the steadfast snow plow refuses to turn her back on those for whom she is the last hope of rescue. The night wears on and Katy continues to plow road after road after road. I really like this story. More importantly, my son enjoys it too. Burton does things differently than other creators of picture books, for example, in the middle of the book is a full two-page spread devoted to a coded map of Geoppolis, complete with a numbered key chart so readers can find exactly where everything is located in the small city. I also love how Virginia Lee Burton is able to convincingly ascribe traits of inner strength and courage to a snow plow. It has been seventy years since this book was first published, and it is still being published and enjoyed by children today. I'd like to think it will still be that way for my son's children. Bonus: My son loves that the book includes stickers that he loves putting on his hands or using them to decorate our fridge. ... show more
