  • very reliable with Google Home integration
I use these smart plugs to operate a couple of "dumb" lights in our home office used for video calls. They're a great convenience to be able to operate them with voice commands, which used to require some careful navigation behind the desk to reach the switches. I also set up a Google Home routine to turn on both lights at once - "turn on the video call lights" vs "turn on the camera light" and "turn on the green screen light" - but I can use each individually as needed. A couple of things to note. These plugs require the TP-Link Kasa mobile app to set up and make changes (like renaming devices). After setup, devices will appear in Google Home for you to add to rooms, etc. Also, the plugs are 2.4GHz only. This caused me a minor hiccup during setup when the mobile app (operating on a 5GHz device) didn't see the plug. Once I figured that out, setup was easy. But as wifi standards keep progressing, keep in mind that you'll have to keep the 2.4GHz band up and running. On our wifi network, these plugs are the only devices still on 2.4GHz - everything else is on 5GHz. Luckily, our mesh router operates both bands as a single logical network. If your setup has different SSIDs for each band, you'll have to have all your smart devices on your 2.4GHz wifi for them to work together. I didn't think about that before buying these plugs, but as they work pretty flawlessly as intended, I'm not going to ding them for this. It's just something to consider for future-proofing your smart home. ... show more

  • Darn good smart plug for the price
These are relatively compact. If you have a normal 2-outlet receptacle, you can still have one open spot with one of these plugged in. You do have to download the Kasa app to set them up. Once installed, you can link with the Google smart home app and control from that. I reluctantly took one star off because 2 of the 4 required me to repeat the (simple) set-up process twice (or more) to get them to link to my wi-fi. Not sure if that was my wi-fi equipment or a Kasa issue. But once linked, absolutely no issues. They will have a longer and more versatile life than a smart bulb. Note that anything you plug in must have a simple on/off button or switch to start (like a lamp). No good for anything that needs additional settings on the controlled device before turning on. Mine are all controlling lamps and it is really nice not to have to go around every day turning lights on and off. By the way, with Google Home, I can turn my lights on/off with these plugs even when traveling or away from home. Nice if I come home after dark. The lights are on already. ... show more

  • Easy, fast setup. Works well.
Pros: Super easy and fast to set up Works well Works with Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT Cons: No Apple Homekit A bit more difficult to set up Google Home than other devices This Kasa smart switch by TP-Link was a pleasure to set up. I had it set up literally in less than 5 minutes, and about as long to link to Alexa and Google Home. The set up instructions are really nothing more than a card telling you to download the Kasa app on your smartphone and adding the switch to the app. The set up is easy. As with most WiFi controlled devices, the device goes into AP mode for configuration and then into device mode for operation. Unlike other devices, and seemingly any that support HomeKit, it simply has you connect to that access point on the phone, then go back to the app. The app connects to the device and scans WiFi. You select the WiFi SSID (network name) you want, enter the password, and done. At this point the switch can be controlled from the app. To add Alexa you select the Works with Kasa option in the app, select Alexa. Then enable in Alexa, and done. Google home is a bit less direct, and a bit more clumsy than other devices, but still pretty easy. You need to go into the Google home app, add a device, search for Kasa, then log into Kasa, then configure. A few more steps, but overall not that bad. It also supports IFTTT, and Samsung Smart home that I didn't set up. It does not support Apple HomeKit. That is probably why it was easy to set up. I really would like to be able to use HomeKit, but almost nothing works well with HomeKit. The whole set up with the code mostly doesn't work, and if it does it then gets disconnected. This brings me to why I bought the Kasa in the first place. I had a WeMo (Belkin) smart switch, the equivalent product to this. I couldn't get it to connect after multiple attempts. I called WeMo support (surprisingly a human on a phone). After well over an hour I was finally able to get the WeMo to connect, then get it to connect to HomeKit, Alexa, and Google home. Great. I had the switch in an easy to access socket to set up. I unplugged it to move to where it needed to be and the WeMo stopped connecting to WiFi. After factory resetting the WeMo I was able to get it to connect back to WiFi, but as soon as it was unplugged and plugged back in, it wouldn't connect again. At this point I just gave up and ordered the Kasa based on other reviews. It was night and day to set up. Similar to the WeMo, I used an easy to access socket to set up, then unplugged it and moved it to the location where the light to be controlled is. With the Kasa, no problem. This is the same location, and the same WiFi network. The Kasa works. The WeMo doesn't. Part of the problem is HomeKit. HomeKit compatible devices use the HomeKit set up on iOS devices. Some devices sort of let you bypass this, with the WeMo being one of those devices. This is how I initially got it to connect with customer service, by connecting directly to the switch. If it fails though HomeKit recognizes the WiFi AP as a connected device for at least 15 minutes. You need to wait 15 minutes to try again. The whole thing is a mess. I really like Apple devices, but HomeKit is just way more trouble than its worth. Ironically, the only device that I've found that works with HomeKit is a Sony Android TV! That TV now controls the light plugged into the Kasa switch with Google Home. Again, the setup on the Kasa was really easy, the way it should be. The competing WeMo was hours of frustration with no results. This was the second WeMo (it was part of a 2-pack like the Kasa), and the first one was also difficult and unreliable. Unless you absolutely can't live without HomeKit, buy this Kasa. The Kasa just works. ... show more

  • Works perfectly!
This was my first smart plug. (I use it to turn my wax warmers on and off.) I’ve been using them for about a month and they work PERFECTLY. The set up took about 5 minutes and the directions were easy to follow. Everything connected easily and still continues to do so. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a smart plug. ... show more

  • Sweet and convenient plugs
We’ve had these plugs for several months and enjoy the convenience. They are easily controlled through an app that can be downloaded. We initially purchased them to control a lamp to go on and off when we travel and have since purchased more for other applications. It is convenient for setting light fixtures to automatically turn on and off at set times, to turn on and off lights before going to bed at night or early in the morning. We haven’t tied the outlets in with Alexa because of the location of Alexa to our bedroom. We love the outlets and would recommend the product. ... show more

  • It needs to be activated exactly like the instructions indicate. Then it works beautifully.
Once initiated, they work perfectly and with many options. If Alexa goes on strike, you can still use the phone app to turn on or off whatever you are controlling. Example: Nothing is nicer than to come home in the dark and the moment you step in the house tell Alexa to turn a/some lights. If you can call out loud enough, She (Alexa) will turn them on while you are still on the porch. I like these so much that I reordered some more twice. ... show more
