  • I'm not sure what a beginner uke is anymore.
Style: Soprano
I keep seeing comments that this is a fantastic beginner uke. That is rubbish. This is a fantastic ukulele regardless of skill level. What do you want before it is no longer a beginners instrument? It has a rosewood fretboard, nickel frets, geared tuners, great action, great sound, comes with quality strings. So what's left? I understand that it doesn't have a solid wood body but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are people like me that don't want to concern themselves with whether or not the humidity in the corner of the bedroom is going to warp the body of our favorite ukulele. I don't have to worry so much about humidity with this ukulele. I have three ukuleles now. One is an Oscar Schmidt OU3 concert and the other is a mango Fluke. The fluke is much deeper and louder. This Kala ukulele manages to remain delicate and still project it's sound well. It's hard to tell you what I appreciate about this ukulele without bringing emotion into it. But I'm going to try to explain. If I were knocking around with a friend who had an acoustic guitar then I would grab my Fluke. If I were singing with a group of kids I would grab my Fluke. It's loud, fun, and looks cool. If I were posing for a picture I would grab my Oscar Schmidt because it looks beautiful. That's mostly what it's good for. Nothing wrong with that. It really is a pretty concert ukulele. However, if i'm going to sit in the front lawn by myself under the moonlight and pitch a ballad out there this Kala is the ukulele I'm taking. If I'm singing to my wife, this Kala is the ukulele I'm using. Do you know what that means? It means that this ukulele is special. ... show more

  • The sound is beautiful.
Style: Concert
I chose this ukulele because of it's wonderful tone. My daughter has been going through ptsd and getting out of bed is a monumental task. She's an adult so I'm limited on what I can do to help if she won't accept it. I spend a lot of time in her room just trying to get her out of bed every day. I was becoming resentful. I was trying to help her and she would yell at me and I would yell right back so I decided to use that time to learn to play Ukulele. What could possibly be more annoying than listening to someone learn to play a new instrument? That would get her up!! ...and I would benefit from all the time I could put into learning instead of being upset. Well, my diabolical plan did not work out the way I thought it would. The very first day I received this ukulele my husband helped me tune it and I spent three hours learning to play it next to her while she was in bed. She finally got up and told me that was the most wonderful way to wake up because it sounded so beautiful. These were much nicer words than she usually uses when I wake her up. She would now like her own ukulele and wants to learn to play. When I'm practicing and she walks by, she tells me how beautiful my ukulele sounds and how cute it is. I got her one for Christmas. It's under the tree right now. ... show more

  • I love my little big uke
Style: Concert
I had a Kala Makala soprano and my music teacher (yes, I'm an adult taking music lessons) thought maybe the concert size would be a little easier. She was right. The soprano is so cute and I love mine, but the sound that comes out of this concert size is a little less tinny and more smooth. I enjoy practicing more and can practice for longer actually. I also purchased a Coroba 15cm concert uke at the same time. I thought the cordoba was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the lighter wood, but it sounded too boomy-echoy. I don't know how else to explain it. So, I stuck with this one because to me it seemed more the sound a uke would make and less the sound of a tiny guitar. Lastly, I don't know if I realized it came without white binding and closed gears, because I'm not sure if the price difference ($115 for this one and $80 for the non white binding open gear one at the time I purchased) is worth it. But I do like how the binding snazzes it up a bit! I would definitely recommend this ukelele. ... show more

  • It’s all about the sound
Style: Soprano
I’ve played this exact uke that someone else owned and it was perfect and wonderful. Played and sounded amazing. Which is why I ordered this one. That being said, the sound on this product was pretty dead and strings did not play well, so with both the sound and play off this uke was unacceptable. Also the tuning peg on one string would not turn correctly, kept turning and wouldn’t engage and therefore could not hold the tune. Painful if you love sound and music and have an ear…. Sadly I returned it. ... show more

  • Excellent sound and tuning for an affordable ukulele.
Style: Soprano
Excellent mellow sound quality. I ordered the ebony one, but received this one instead. I gave it as a birthday present for my 90 year old best friend and he loves it. It’s beautiful even if it’s not the ebony one. I suggest the $10 Kala clip on tuner! So easy to use!! I’m a musician, so tone quality and intonation are very important to me when choosing an instrument. This Uke got excellent reviews from several well known sources. I loved the video which also helped me make the final decision. Excellent marketing. ... show more

  • A great Uke at ANY price
Style: Soprano
I have had this Uke for about a year and a half. The short review is that I absolutely love it. Since I bought this one I have gotten the Kala Concert and Tenor ukes. The quality and sound of all three is unsurpassed. As I have progressed with the ukulele I have played other sopranos and have not found any to equal the sound of this one. It is simply a wonderful uke. I'm not sure what the difference is between a "beginner" uke and a "better" one is, but again, even the "better" ukes I've played don't surpass, or in most cases even come close to this one. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • So Impressed!!
Style: Concert
I had no idea I would like this inexpensive Kala Uke as much as I do! Wow! I have a soprano of another brand and a concert of another brand. Both of them a bit prettier, also more expensive. Dollar for dollar this is the best deal! I bought it to leave at a friends house so I could noodle around when the mood hit me without having to take an instrument each time. I am seriously considering buying another just like this to sit by my chair. Readily available as opposed to being in the other room hanging on the wall! ... show more
