  • pretty good toy
graphics could be much better and tracks very hard to put together

  • Great... But required an extra bucket of K'nex pieces to complete and modify.
I was disappointed to discover that my box had a few missing pieces upon completion. Specifically, I was missing a gray collar piece, a red 180 deg piece, a red stick, and a orange 30 deg piece. Luckily, I had extra K'nex pieces from a separate purchase and it contained all what I needed to replace the missing items. Once assembled, it's fun to watch as the coaster make its way upward and spiral downward by gravity. I made some adjustments using the spare box of K'nex pieces I had as the chain kept on rubbing across the track. The chain skipped a tooth once in a while but with modifications using another bucket of K'nex pieces, it ran a lot smoother and never skipped. Overall, besides having some missing pieces, it's a great toy and very big too! The AA batteries that it requires seems to last very long especially when you use rechargeable batteries like Eneloops. If you're into structural engineering, this set is also a must. You can demonstrate shear and moment forces quite well and see how the frame bends when you apply pressure on various corners. ... show more

  • My first K'Nex build, loved it.
My first K'Nex building set and I have to say it is great. I build it on my YouTube channel if you want to see it in action (search for KTAF in google or on Youtube and you'll find Kid Toys Are Fun). A little bit more challenging to build than say a 649 piece LEGO model, but that makes it fun too. I would say a 9 year old could probably build it but might need a couple of minutes of help now and then. Once built it is great to turn on and just watch, repeat daily! The coaster runs down really smooth and fast, goes back up on the chain, it really is what you'd expect - great fun build and great fun motorized model. Takes a few hours if it is your first K'Nex build. It's big! ... show more

  • Feedback from an 11 year old
I asked my 11 year old son to give his review of this product. He did not give it five stars because he said, "At the top, I have to push off the car because the chain doesn't do it for me and where the track loops over the belt, the car gets caught up there." The K'nex Atomic is his favorite roller coaster. ... show more

  • its a great set once you get it together but requires a ...
I agree with the others, its a great set once you get it together but requires a lot of review of the instructions due to very poor detail around which pieces are needed to complete an instruction step - and since many of the connection pieces are interchangeable, you realize you used the wrong pieces when you run out too soon. KNEX should standardize on some of the connection pieces (omit the blue "half" connection pieces and simply use all grey "full" connections) to eliminate this or get a better team on the instructions. ... show more

I bought the roller coaster for an 11 year old grandson. He assembled it by himself on our dining room table on Christmas. I visited his bedroom this past weekend (6 weeks after Christmas) and found the roller coaster still erected and working well. We decorated it with twinkle Christmas lights.

  • K'nex, clearly not legos.
This roller coaster is quite tedious to put together, however my son and I are "lego guys" and used to instruction manuals that are far more detailed and thoughtful. With that said, now that it is put together it is cool so long as the chain all stays connected. This is am imperfect feature about this K'nex set-- the black chain, which is the keystone for making the toy operate AT ALL constantly breaks. Each time the chain snaps it requires another few minutes to re-thread and connect again. The longest my son has gone between breaks is about 2 minutes. Pretty disappointing since K'nex designed a pretty cool toy, other than the chain, but without it functioning better it is a bum toy. This pains me since I am born and raised in PA and that is where K'nex are made. Oh well. Back to the legos. ... show more
