  • K&N is the best
Style: Cotton Oil
Now all my (3) vehicles (F150, Civic, Outback) have K&N engine air filters - tired of messing with paper filters. Next I'll be installing the cabin filters. Been using the K&N in my F150 for a long time - 20+ years. Still looks brand new and believe I've only cleaned it once. Awesome!

  • Not too Shabby!
Style: Cotton Oil
Have noticed a cleaner flow after swapping the old Perrin filter. I like the cleaning capabilities, overall a good buy. The K&N air filter is somewhat more complex. The unique design features multiple layers of oiled cotton fabric which captures the airborne dirt particles. These dirt particles cling to the fibers of the filter and actually become part of the filtering media. This process, known as depth loading, allows the K&N air filter to retain significantly more dirt per square inch than a paper filter. The cotton fabric is sandwiched between pleated aluminum screen. Pleating increases surface area which in turn prolongs service intervals. Pleating exposes substantially more surface area compared to a flat element like foam. The dirt particles collected on the surface of a K&N element have little effect on air flow during much of its service life because there are no small holes to clog. Particles are stopped by layers of crisscrossed cotton fibers and held in suspension by the oil. As the filter begins to collect debris, an additional form of filter action begins to take place because air must first pass through the dirt particles trapped on the surface. That means a K&N air filter continues to exhibit high air flow throughout the life of the filter while it is accumulating dirt. At the same time, the air flow for an average paper air filter can decrease dramatically as the paper element gets dirty. So as dirt accumulates, the performance advantages of a K&N air filter can increase! Tests performed by an independent laboratory commonly known as the Frazier permeability test have shown that the Medium used in K&N air filters flows more than 300% more air than paper air filter medium when compared on a square inch per square inch basis. A Square inch comparison is not directly proportional to the increase you can expect from installing a K&N air filter in replacement of a paper air filter due to the effect of such things as filter size, number and depth of pleats. However, you can be assured a K&N air filter will provide dramatically more air flow which can enhance engine performance. ... show more

  • Easy install even for the mechanically-challenged
Style: Cotton Oil
This was recommended by a friend who swears by K&N air filters. Fit my 2008 Subaru Impreza sedan 2.5L. It was fairly easy to install myself (I'm female and not at all mechanically-inclined). This saved me $19 over having the oil change guys do it. But, it didn't come with directions. Instead, K&N gives a "helpful hints" sheet that was only semi-useful since I had no idea what I was doing. Steps: 1) Make sure your car is off for a while so that everything under the hood is cool in temperature. 2) Disconnect the negative terminal using a small wrench. 3) Unplug the fastener from the big tube that holds the plastic pipe by pressing the small tab. 4) Loosen the screw on the ring clamp for that big tube. 5) Flip up the clips on the air filter compartment. 6) Spread apart the compartment holding the air filter. Don't break plastic parts! You may need to remove the filter hood first. 7) Remove the old air filter carefully. Note which direction it was facing as you pulled it up out of the car, as you'll need to install this K&N the same way. 8) Match up the K&N filter to the old filter to make sure it's the same exact size. K&N is more wide than tall. For my vehicle, this meant turning the K&N filter so that the lines were perpendicular to the old filter. 9) Install the K&N filter by sliding it in the same direction and making sure all four corners go inside the frame. 10) Press the compartment together (it should fit snugly). 11) Re-fasten the clips on the air filter compartment. 12) Re-tighten the screw on the clamp. 13) Re-plug in the connector on the big plastic tube thing. 14) Re-connect the negative battery terminal exactly how you disconnected it before. 15) If you took out the filter hood, re-attach that. 16) Re-check that you did everything. 17) Voila! ... show more
