  • Hard to imagine a more complete kit at a reasonable price
Style: Rotary Laser System Kit
UPDATE after EIGHT years of use: I've now had my "Johnson Level & Tool 99-006K Self Leveling Rotary Laser System Kit" for EIGHT years and it's still going strong. I do dirt work/grading, etc and the kit is often used in rough environments and then placed in the back seat of my truck until the next job comes up. I've taken reasonably good care of it but I've certainly not been gentle with it and I've never had a case for it. It's been hit with flying debris and knocked/blown over so many times. That says a ton about how well-built these units are! Still going strong in March 2023. Originally purchased from Amazon in January 2015. ------------------- I received my rotary laser system and unboxed it as quickly as I could to try it out. The calibration descriptions were quite clear and within a few minutes I was up and running. The tripod is very sturdy with clamps that lock securely. The laser detector was loud (quite loud actually, I'll be putting tape over mine to muffle the sound a bit) but slid smoothly up and down the boom pole. In fact, I may add a small piece of felt to help it move even more smoothly. The carrying case for the rotary laser is very well padded and seemingly well-built. My primary buying concern was to get all the necessary pieces for a complete system in one purchase. Initially, I was planning to buy a used system off Craigslist but decided instead I didn't want a hodge-podge system. My one request of Johnson is that I could buy a larger case that would carry perhaps everything but the pole or the tripod. One more - none of the barcodes on the product literature led to the promised video described on each. Maybe this was a momentary glitch but it certainly didn't work on my attempted. Regardless, the system was easily understood and setup straight out of the box. So far, I'm a fan! ************One Year Update********** And one year later...I still love this thing. It has performed flawlessly for me and earlier this week I took a picture to give you an idea of the range of the laser. You can't really see the tripod but it is sitting next to my white Tundra on the upper right side of the image. It is sending a signal out to the receiver and I'm confident I could have moved at least another 50 to 100 feet away from the transmitter. I estimate this distance at about 400 feet. ... show more

  • Not for use outside without the finder. Period.
Style: Rotary Laser System Kit
Let's get this out of the way right now: This is NOT a laser that will work outside without the finder. Period. It seems a lot of reviews are a bit vague about this, but I will tell you right now that it's not the kind of laser you can set up and walk out a hundred feet and expect to see a red line on your tape in the middle of a summer day. It just isn't going to happen. First thing after unboxing I took mine outside on an overcast day and was unable to spot the line on the exterior wall of my house from 10 feet. Even with the glasses they provide, there was no seeing that beam. I will say that I was able to locate the beam using the reflective target, but even then, I had to be looking at it at *just* right angle. On the other hand, it worked great with the finder. Just be aware that you will absolutely need to use the finder outside. So if that isn't what you want or need, this will plain and simple NOT work for you. Next, don't trust the calibration from the factory. I checked mine right out of the box and it was off by at least 3/16 at about 30' on both X and Y axis. Oh, and the manual says the adjustment screws use a flat blade screwdriver. They don't. Theones on mine are a 3mm allen screw. So if you don't have one of those that's at *least* 4" long, you need to get one at the same time you order this level. One like this will do it- https://www.amazon.com/Bondhus-3756-Screwdriver-ProGuard-Finish/dp/B002U2X1SE/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1491585820&sr=1-4&keywords=3mm+allen+screwdriver If you have one less than 4" long, you literally have to disassemble the horizontal base in order to access the adjustment screw for the Y axis because it's buried deep in the bowels of the level. So let's talk about this calibration procedure. It's a huge pain in the ass. Among other things, in order to do the Y axis you have to remove the top battery in order to access the adjusting screw. So, you check the calibration. Go back to the level and turn it off and pull the battery cover. Remove the top batter on the right to be able to stick your really long allen screwdriver in there and find the screw and make your adjustment. Then put the battery back, screw the cover back on, turn the thing on, and go recheck your calibration. Too much or not enough? Go back and do it all over again. Wash, rinse, repeat. I found it easiest and most accurate to use the grade rod and the finder to make the adjustments, which were substantial. But once I got it adjusted it seemed to hold them pretty well. One thing I discovered though, when I took it off the base, moved it around, and rechecked my calibration, it seemed to be slightly off again. But I found that by loosening the mounting screw on the tripod and slowly rotating the level a couple of times while still sitting on the head of the tripod it went right back to perfect calibration. I think this gives the pendulum the chance to center more accurately, that's all I can figure. I just know that once I did that my calibration was again dead on. Which is another thing I'll add, a lot of questions asking about the accuracy. It will be as accurate as your calibration, and your willingness to frequently check it and adjust as necessary. I bought this to build decks. At first I was disappointed that it lacked the power I somehow came to believe it had. But I think for the money, it will do the job, and certainly comes with everything you could possibly need, I would recommend it unless you need one that you can see outside in the sun without the finder. This won't do that at all. But if you have inside work, or don't mind using the finder outside, you probably won't find a better deal anywhere for the money. ... show more

  • Nice, complete, full-featured tool
Style: Rotary Laser System Kit
I was going to rent a rotary laser, but I decided that, for about 4 days' rental cost, I could buy this one. I am quite pleased with it. I'm not a construction pro, and I don't use this daily, but I have already used it about 10 days for a couple new building foundation layout projects. It works very nicely. It seems to be well made, with quality components. Very nice tripod and telescoping grade stick. Nice well-padded case for the laser. Includes laser safe glasses. a freestanding target, and a drop-ceiling bracket. I very much like the auto-level feature; I just put the tripod in, eyeball it to be approximately level, and the put the laser on. Quick and easy. I haven't used it for anything but horizontal work, but it will also work as a vertical plumb laser. This is rated for up to 800 feet, but I have only used it so far for less than 100', and it works great for me. In hindsight, perhaps I should have paid the extra $38 for Johnson's model 99-026K which includes a hard case for all components, but for my use; mostly around my property and little traveling use, what I got is great. If you're putting the whole thing into a truck and taking it to various job sites, you probably should pay the extra $38 and get the 99-026K with hard case. ... show more
