This jig is small (just 2x2x1 inches) but extremely useful. The holes in the metal allow you to sand your cuts to a perfectly straight squared edge or an angled one. It holds the metal for filing for a perfect edge every time. Because the vise is steel, you can use fine sandpaper on it without damaging it. This price point is perfect for the hobbyist. The steel is precision milled and comes to a smooth closure of the parts when aligned. The vise is easy even for my arthritic hands to close and clamp down. I have small hands, so the vise fits perfectly in my palm and is easy to hold. Great tool, especially at such a good price. I use this to hold ring shanks to file them in preparation for soldering to a plate. Works great for this. I've used it to square the ends of wire and bezel wire, and it is great for those purposes too. All around great little tool.

It’s an inexpensive jig and it’s a good value. The screw tapping is clean, the parts move. I will clean up the packing grease and it should move a bit easier. The finish on the screw heads and the jig itself are clean and functional. It’s an overall good device and the amount I will use it doesn’t justify paying twice the price. What you’re giving up for a budget price is; the device has a hairline gap on one side when I put the pieces back into battery. For the price, I can live with this minor imperfection. I was a little skeptical because its a lot cheaper than the same (looking) tool from the jewelry supply company I usually buy from, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I use it with both a saw and a file, and the steel is hard enough that my jewelers saw and files don't scratch it, which seems ideal to me (yes, I realize it will dull the files). Having never owned on elf these before, I now realize that someday I'm gonna need the one that has a 60 degree option as well. Oh well, until then, I'm happy with this one. ... show more

I bought this for use in jewelry work. It is great for making sure i get a flush 90 degree edge when filing things down. There are also wire sections to get even wire lengths. The only thing I would change would a wider max opening so i could fit larger items in there.

    • Metal shafts are not properly aligned or real smooth operating out of the box...but
...after I cleaned the layer of grease off the parts I took some 800 wet/dry sandpaper and sanded the smooth part of both shafts, below the threaded part, to remove the rough machine marks (which cause some of the binding) then the moving parts slide up and down a lot easier. On mine the two threaded shafts are a little closer at the top where the nuts go than down where they are secured in the bottom piece. If you hold them apart with two thumbs while sliding the movable parts down they go on a lot easier. Once you get the movable parts on you will not be removing them completely, just spreading them apart to get the wire, tubing or sheet into position. ... show more
