Bought 1 of these for the longer hot element. After cutting about 2" te running light on the power pack went out, it got cold and it never worked again. SO... I returned/replaced it with the same thing. The new one worked for about 3 minutes before it died. I tested the volts & amps on our power outlet and it's fine. It makes cutting styrofoam insulation less messy and the cuts are more accurate than using a mat knife or other blade. I used it for 1" and 2" thick insulation and it requires more patience with the thicker sheets. I found that by holding the blade at an angle (45 to 60 degrees) and adding a spacer under the styrofoam(so the hot tip was sure to penetrate) that it resulted in a nice sealed edge. Exactly as advertised. Cuts cleanly through foam for 30-45 seconds, then you need to let it heat back up for about a minute before using again.

Using it to cut styrofoam for house insulation, and cut the time for custom fitting the blocks, in half. On-Off switch makes it easy to shut off for extended periods. Heats up quickly. Do need to practice how fast to go through the pieces, in order to keep the wire hot. Excellent addition to the toolbox! ... show more
